Remembering Steven Flynn: A Giant in Film Marketing

Steven Flynn, a marketing luminary whose influence resonated through the corridors of Gramercy Pictures and Focus Features, passed away on May 23 after bravely battling renal cancer for four years. He was 70. His impact on the film industry goes beyond mere numbers; it is etched in the success of many iconic films.

A Marketing Maestro

Flynn’s career is marked by his pivotal role in the marketing of numerous blockbusters that have become cultural touchstones. Among his standout projects were:

  • Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
  • The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
  • Dead Man Walking (1995)
  • Fargo (1996)
  • The Big Lebowski (1998)
  • Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

These films are merely the tip of the iceberg, showcasing a portfolio that has left an indelible mark on cinema history.

An Ascending Star in Film Marketing

In September 1993, Flynn was appointed Senior VP of Marketing at the newly minted Gramercy Pictures, a collaboration between PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and Universal Pictures. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the company’s transformation, helping it merge with October Films in 1999 to become USA Films. In 2001, he was part of the merger that birthed Focus Features, eventually rising to the position of Executive VP of Marketing by 2007.

The Consultant Era

After his impactful years at Focus Features, Flynn transitioned into a consultancy role, lending his expertise to Vivendi Entertainment, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, among others. His insights were invaluable during this transitional phase in his career.

A Visionary’s Legacy

Russell Schwartz, the president of Gramercy, reflected on Flynn’s remarkable contributions, stating, “Steven was my first hire at Gramercy Pictures and quickly showed himself to be the most optimistic and problem-solving marketing executive I ever met.” Under Flynn’s stewardship, the marketing division flourished, and he even took charge of organizing the office infrastructure.

Gramercy was the closest company to Camelot that many of us had ever worked at, and Steven’s presence was a big part of that. It’s no wonder his email address was [email protected],” Schwartz added, highlighting the camaraderie and creativity that defined the office atmosphere.

Early Life and Innovations

Born in Fenton, Michigan, Flynn graduated from Fenton High School in 1972 before attending the University of Michigan to study electrical engineering. However, his passion for film grew stronger as he worked as a movie theater manager in Ann Arbor.

One of his notable early achievements involved coordinating a televised halftime show during a college football game that featured the original Star Wars—an event that grabbed the attention of Salah M. Hassanein, then-president of UA Theaters’ Eastern Division. This opportunity launched Flynn into a successful marketing career, ultimately propelling him to prominent roles at major studios like Orion Pictures and beyond.

A Fond Farewell

Flynn is survived by his partner of 43 years, Timothy, as well as his two sisters, Linda and Patricia, and his niece and nephews. A graveside service and memorial will take place on June 20 in Flint, Michigan, with an additional celebration of his life in the Los Angeles area. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
