Princeton’s Strong Start: Zhang Shines in Ivy League Women’s Golf Championship

Introduction: Golf’s Elite Battle for Ivy League Glory

In an electrifying season opener for the 2025 Ivy League Women’s Golf Championship, it was Princeton University that emerged as the early frontrunner. With a remarkable team score of +1, the Tigers have set the stage for a riveting tournament at the stunning Royal Palm Golf Club in Naples, Florida. Not far behind, Columbia and Penn are locked in close competition at +4, promising an exhilarating second round.

H2: A Stellar Performance from Harvard’s Vanessa Zhang

While team dynamics dominated the leaderboard, one individual performance stood out on the opening day: Harvard’s Vanessa Zhang. The talented golfer dazzled the audience by carding the lowest round of the day at -4 (68). Zhang’s round was nothing short of captivating—she kicked off her game with a pair of birdies and finished strong, sinking three birdies in her last seven holes. Her efforts placed Harvard in a respectable fourth position with a score of +9. Following closely are Yale and Dartmouth, who recorded +12 and +13, respectively.

H3: Contenders in the Rearview

Zhang currently holds a two-stroke lead over Columbia’s Christine Chang, who found her rhythm early with two birdies before settling for an impressive score of 70 after parring the rest of her round. Meanwhile, Julie Shin of Penn and Sarah Shao of Columbia are just three shots behind Zhang, showcasing their potential with scores of 71 and 71, respectively.

Shin’s scorecard featured an electrifying front nine with four birdies, but a double bogey on the 11th hole unfortunately dampened her momentum.

H4: Princeton’s Dominance in the Top Ten

Princeton proved its depth with an impressive four players landing in the top ten. Abra Richmond, YanJun Liu, and Olivia Duan each finished their rounds at even-par 72, tied for fifth place—a feat bolstered by their collective resilience. Richmond faced a late-game stumble with three bogeys across her final six holes, while Liu showcased a remarkable comeback, recovering from being three-over to finish her round at even-par thanks to a spectacular birdie-par-eagle finish.

Completing the top ten were Penn’s Maggie Ni and Natalie Cao, both sitting at one-over-par and tied with Catherine Rao of Princeton, who ended the day at +1.
