Healing the World: Community and Lifestyle – A Path to Unity
In the ever-evolving landscape of our global community, the thought of healing the world resonates more than ever. In Part I of Healing the World, we delved into the significance of self-care and the rejuvenating practices of prayer and meditation amidst life’s turbulence. In Part II, we explored how collaboration within the Baha’i community fosters deeper connections and outreach. Now, in this final installment, let’s uncover how the internal workings of the Baha’i community can serve as an inspiring model for all of us.
The Essence of Baha’i Governance
In just three days, as the local Baha’is gather, the air will be thick with anticipation. Thousands of Baha’i communities worldwide will be electing their local governing bodies, known as Assemblies. Comprising nine members, each at least 21 years old, these bodies hold the collective authority — a stark contrast to conventional models where power often resides in a single individual.
A Unique Democratic Process
Baha’i governance embodies a pure form of democracy, yet it remains distinct. Unlike traditional political arenas, there are no nominations, no campaigns, and absolutely no annoying political ads! Every Baha’i adult’s name automatically appears on the ballot, creating an inclusive atmosphere. The electorate consists of community members aged 18 and older, while for National Assemblies, the voters are elected delegates, and for the Universal House of Justice, members of the National Assemblies take on the role of electors.
Why Ridvan Matters
Interestingly, Baha’i elections coincide with one of the holiest periods of the Baha’i calendar — Ridvan (REZ-vahn), a twelve-day celebration marking Baha’u’llah’s retreat in the Ridvan Garden before his exile to the Holy Land. The term "Ridvan" translates to "Paradise," symbolizing the sacred nature of these elections. Voters approach this responsibility with a prayerful heart, striving for purity of motive and spirit. They are encouraged to select candidates demonstrating selfless devotion and mature experience, reinforcing the idea that elected members are humble servants rather than elite rulers.
The Art of Consultation
How do these Assemblies function? Through a dynamic process known as consultation. But this isn’t mere discussion — it’s a transformative exchange of ideas. When an opinion is shared, it transcends the individual, belonging instead to the group. Here, ego takes a backseat as all members work together toward the greater good.
The consultation process unfolds with an atmosphere of cordiality and dispassion, leading to decisions made through deep prayerful consideration. Ideally, decisions arrive unanimously; however, if consensus isn’t reached, the majority’s choice prevails. This framework encourages adaptability; if a decision proves unwise, it can be rectified without the fear of individual blame.
A Future of Unity
While the Baha’i administrative system is still maturing, its trajectory promises a bright future. These local and national assemblies are poised to evolve into Houses of Justice, guiding humanity into an era defined by unity and collaboration.
In essence, the principles behind the Baha’i election process and communal decision-making offer a refreshing perspective. They remind us that collective wisdom and selflessness play crucial roles in fostering a harmonious society.
