A Glimpse into The Nugget’s Colorful History

The foundation of The Nugget is steeped in history, having started its journey as the Seabreeze Restaurant in 1960 after transforming from Lucky’s Grocery/CARPENTRY Shop. By the 1970s, Roland Trombley began serving The Nugget’s famed burgers, fries, and chili, with the establishment operating alongside the White Owl Surf Shop.

In 1976, Sally and Doug Taylor acquired The Nugget, and by 1987, they expanded the space into the full restaurant we know today. Patrons would indulge in hearty T-bone steaks for just $8.95, and the beloved Gold Miner’s Hamburger would go for a modest $3.10. The vibrant décor—think Western saloon with rustic wagon wheels and customer-donated animal mounts—evokes the spirit of the California Gold Rush, infusing every meal with a sense of history.

An Invitation to the Table

The Nugget is not just a restaurant; it’s a landmark where countless memories are forged. It serves as a gathering spot for the Rancheros Visitadores, who would ride their horses and wagons into town, ordering drinks in true cowboy style. The establishment has seen some notable figures, including former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, who famously played a saxophone, which still hangs on the wall today.

Montgomery took over The Nugget in 2008, and shortly after, he opened a new location in Goleta. His granddaughter, Kaila Catteno, manages the Goleta site, while the Summerland location is helmed by General Manager Paul Garcia. Excitingly, a third location is set to open soon in Carpinteria, owned by Montgomery’s daughter, Cindy Catteno.

Bob Montgomery (BM): While many core elements have been preserved, we’ve significantly expanded the menu to cater to a wide range of tastes, featuring burgers, sandwiches, salads, and classic American favorites.

CH: What makes Summerland a special location for The Nugget?
BM: I have cherished memories from my family visiting this spot for breakfast and lunch during the 1970s, so it felt natural to buy The Nugget from the Taylors.

CH: The décor here is so unique. What inspired the design?
BM: The saloon-style vibe was trendy at the time, and we’ve incorporated customer memorabilia over the years to add a personal touch to the atmosphere.

Montgomery takes pride in sourcing ingredients from local farms and breweries and features a rotating selection of local beers on tap, accentuating the region’s vibrant food culture. The menu showcases traditional American steakhouse favorites but often includes flair from nearby influences, ensuring every dish resonates with the community’s spirit.
