However, lacking a viable biodiesel market in Honduras, they pivoted to soap and dog food production.
Economic Viability: Incentivizing Change
To encourage businesses to legally dispose of their used cooking oil, Sustenta offers to buy it at competitive prices, ranging from 2.50 to 3.50 Lempiras (£0.08 to £0.11) per pound. Their innovative approach garnered international recognition, earning them a $20,000 prize as a winner of the 2023 Youth4Climate Energy Challenge.
Building Partnerships
In May 2024, Sustenta made significant strides by signing a contract with Walmart‘s Mexican and Central American division, ensuring a consistent supply of used cooking oil and grease from affiliated businesses. This partnership is vital for scaling operations and combating the black market competition.
The Recycling Process
Once collected, the cooking oil is transported to a facility in Comayagua, where it’s purified and undergoes saponification—the chemical process that turns fats into soap. As Pineda notes, "We want to develop a circular ecological system in which we reuse everything."
