Paul’s journey, spanning both professional excellence and personal passion, leaves an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

His Impact at St. Thomas

During his tenure as a Creative Services Project Manager in the Marketing, Insights, and Communications (MIC) department from January 2018 until his retirement in October 2023, Engebretson played a pivotal role in sculpting the university's in-house marketing operations. His contributions laid the foundation for essential creative processes and rigorous operational systems that guide MIC's work today. From optimizing project workflows to establishing coherent billing protocols, Engebretson's legacy continues to resonate, shaping the future of marketing at St. Thomas.

His colleagues remember him not just for his professional achievements, but also for his calming presence, thoughtful collaboration, and innate kindness. With a quick wit and an eye for compelling design, he brought his unique flair to every project. Beyond work, he was a known aficionado of donuts and music, always uplifting those around him.

Before gracing St. Thomas with his creative prowess, Engebretson's extensive experience spanned major organizations, including Boston Scientific and the advertising powerhouse Campbell Mithun. His career, defined by strategic thinking and a relentless pursuit of quality, showcased his sharp creative instincts, making him a notable figure in the marketing landscape.

Outside the office, Engebretson thrived in Minnesota's local music circuit, where he earned the affectionate moniker "Front Row Paul." His commitment to supporting local artists was unwavering; he was often the first to arrive at venues, the closest to the stage, singing along, dancing, and spreading joy. His vibrant spirit and enthusiasm shone through in his writings and videos, capturing the essence of the music community he adored.

Celebrating His Life and Legacy

Engebretson’s passion for music has inspired his friends and family to honor his memory with a special two-day music festival on May 31 and June 1 at Palmer’s Bar in Minneapolis. This celebration will encapsulate the joy and love he brought to the music community, making it a fitting tribute to a remarkable life.

Personal Reflection and Tributes

A lifelong learner, Engebretson had taken business communication courses at St. Thomas when it was still a college, later earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota. He leaves behind a loving family, including his partner Sheila Knight, and children Anitra and Andrew (Amanda), along with a grandson, Brandt, and siblings.

While a private celebration of life is planned for family and close friends, Engebretson's memory will live on through the stories and joy he shared with the community.
