Staten Island’s 50th Annual Pre-Passover Food Distribution: A Heroic Community Effort

On April 2nd, 2023, the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island (COJO) hosted its 50th Annual Pre-Passover Food Distribution, a remarkable effort that embodies the spirit of community and assistance during times of need. The event took place at the Aur Torah Sephardic Minyan in New Springville, transforming the venue into a beacon of hope and nourishment as hundreds of families gathered to receive essential foods for the Passover holiday.
Leadership and Support
Under the leadership of Iva Reuven, the organization’s diligent Food Pantry and Social Services Director, the event showcased collaboration with local public officials, civic leaders, and law enforcement. Their joint efforts ensured that the celebration of Passover, a time of reflection and gratitude, would be accessible to all in the community.
Met Council: A Pivotal Partner
The celebration wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support from the Met Council, a linchpin in alleviating food insecurity within the Jewish community across New York City. Mendy Mirocznik, President of COJO, lauded their invaluable contributions, stating, “They are truly the gold standard in fighting poverty in the Jewish community throughout the city. Rabbi Aharon Zeev and President Oshri Reuven of Aur Torah Sephardic Minyan were also praised for their commitment, having adopted COJO’s pantry as a mitzvah project. Mirocznik emphasized the generosity of the Aur Torah community, stating, “It is thanks to the support and generosity of Aur Torah in hosting the pantry that we are able to meet our goals.”
The event’s coordination was further enhanced through the efforts of Ari Weiss, COJO’s security chairman, and Staten Island Shomrim Coordinator, who worked hand-in-hand with the NYPD to ensure a safe and seamless distribution experience.
