To maintain an illusion of legitimacy, the fraudsters orchestrated staged telephonic interviews and online assessments. "These hires were not random," says a police spokesperson. As the candidates were told they had been selected for roles in customer service, e-commerce support, or online gaming, they were unwittingly stepping into a criminal enterprise.

Police suspect he operated remotely using encrypted messaging, VPNs, and temporary email accounts.
