Kansas State University’s Rising Tennis Star: Maralgoo Chogsomjav Shines in the Big 12

MANHATTAN, Kan. – In a remarkable display of talent and perseverance, sophomore Maralgoo Chogsomjav has made waves in the tennis world, earning a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team Singles. This prestigious acknowledgment, announced on April 30, underscores Chogsomjav’s dedication and skill, marking her as the first Wildcat to garner All-Big 12 honors since 2022 when assistant coach Maria Linares achieved a similar feat during her senior season.

A Journey from Mongolia to Manhattan

Hailing from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Chogsomjav’s journey to the collegiate tennis scene is as compelling as her performances on the court. She was distinguished as the Big 12 Player of the Week on February 25, an honor that reflected her tremendous growth and hard work prior to conference play. Additionally, her impressive debut season earned her a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

Coach’s Praise and Expectations

Head coach Jordan Smith has lauded Chogsomjav’s contributions to the team, stating, “I’m incredibly proud of Maggie for her accomplishments on the court. She has always been someone that we can count on and loves giving her best to help K-State win. Stellar Performance Stats

Throughout the season, Chogsomjav achieved a stunning 20-11 record in singles play, with an 8-3 record within the Big 12. Over her two seasons, she has recorded 30 singles wins, boasting a commendable 30-14 career record (13-5 in conference play).

Late-Season Dominance

Chogsomjav finished the season strong, assuming the no. 1 spot in her last matches, where she went 2-2 during both the regular season and the Big 12 Championships. She excelled in the no. 3 position, going undefeated at 7-0, signifying her versatility and resilience.

Thrilling Matches and Tough Competitors

Her season was highlighted by 10 intense three-set matches, where she held an impressive 8-2 record, including a perfect 5-0 against conference opponents. Among her challenges, she faced five ranked opponents, achieving one vital victory against Iowa State’s then-ranked #119 Anna Supapitch Kuearum in a dramatic three-set match ending with scores of 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Doubles Action

In doubles, Chogsomjav finished the season with a 17-15 record, forming a dynamic partnership with Charlotte Keitel for a 10-9 spring record while also playing with Maria Santos during fall tournaments, ending with a 5-6 record.

All-Big 12 Conference Highlights

A total of 24 women were recognized on the All-Big 12 First and Second Team Singles, with Oklahoma State and UCF leading the charge with four and three selections, respectively. Chogsomjav’s achievement cements her place among the elite players in the conference.
