Kendric Maple: A Wrestling Icon Set for History at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame
COLUMBIA, MO – A legend in the wrestling community, Kendric Maple has recently been selected to join the esteemed Class of 2025 at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. This accolade not only honors his remarkable achievements but also underscores his profound impact on the sport in Kansas. The Hall of Fame’s mission is crystal clear: to celebrate athletes who have helped shape the rich tapestry of sports history in Kansas, inspiring future generations in the process.
A Moment of Reflection
In a heartfelt statement, Maple shared his gratitude: "I am honored to be selected for the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. This recognition wouldn’t be possible without the countless mentors who have influenced my life, both as a wrestler and as an individual. I accept this award on their behalf and thank all the coaches, teachers, and family who have supported me."
The Induction Ceremony
Mark your calendars! The Induction Ceremony will be held on August 2, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas. This prestigious event will celebrate the contributions of all ten inductees into the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 – and what a privilege it is for Maple to be the sole representative of wrestling among them. This honor follows closely on the heels of his induction into the Kansas Wrestling Hall of Fame in October 2022.
Honoring Excellence in Kansas Sports
Jim Dunning, Jr., the chairman of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, expressed his pride in recognizing Maple along with this distinguished group, stating, "This is an accomplished collection of individuals who epitomize the spirit of Kansas sports. Their unique stories serve as a wellspring of inspiration for all Kansans."
Career Highlights: A Legacy Built on Excellence
Early Success in High School
A Wichita, Kansas native, Maple’s wrestling journey began at Wichita Heights High School, where he clinched two state titles. His journey to greatness first began in 2008 when he won his inaugural championship at 130 pounds, followed by a second title in 2009 at 135 pounds. A standout athlete, he was not just a four-year letterman but was also honored as Co-Wrestler of the Year and became a Brute National Champion during his high school tenure.
Dominance at the Collegiate Level
Maple’s collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma was nothing short of historic. He achieved All-American status three times, finishing fourth, first, and eighth in his final three seasons, respectively. Notably, he capped his incredible college journey with an undefeated season while securing the 141-pound National Title in the 2012-13 season. Remarkably, he is among just ten wrestlers from Kansas to win an NCAA Championship, and his win in 2013 stood as the most recent until Wyatt Hendrickson triumphed in 2025.
Continued Success in Freestyle Wrestling
Even after college, Maple’s success continued to flourish. He emerged as a two-time U.S. Open champion in freestyle wrestling, earning titles in 2017 and 2022, and proudly represented Tiger Style Wrestling Club during his 2022 victory. As an influential coach at the University of Missouri, he has dedicated six seasons to developing young talent, mentoring 15 All-Americans and celebrating two individual National Championships under his guidance.
