Jurassic World: Rebirth – A Roaring Disappointment

Jurassic World: Rebirth has landed in theaters, and it’s stirring up a blend of nostalgia and frustration among fans of the franchise. As the seventh installment in a series that peaked with the iconic 1993 blockbuster, one must wonder if life should truly continue finding ways to resurrect this cinematic saga.

A Flawed Follow-Up to a Legacy

While Rebirth may show slight improvement over its predecessor, Jurassic World: Dominion, it still fails to deliver the dino carnage that fans crave. The film serves as a stark reminder of how far the franchise has strayed from its roots.

Revisiting Past Glories

Though not without its merits, earlier films like Jurassic Park III had a certain brevity and charm. Fans could hold a candle for 2015’s Jurassic World, which at least attempted to innovate. However, Rebirth feels less like a fresh take and more like a drawn-out exploration of our culture’s exhausting obsession with dinosaurs.

The Film’s Premise: A Mixed Blessing

On paper, the involvement of David Koepp, the original Jurassic Park screenwriter, combined with director Gareth Edwards, promised an exhilarating ride. Yet, Rebirth struggles to remain distinct amid the endless cycle of reboots.

An Underwhelming Opening

The movie kicks off intriguingly, with a mutant T-Rex escaping military confines. The narrative hints at a world weary of dinosaurs, illustrated by graffiti on a trapped dino. This premise holds potential, suggesting a deep exploration of humanity’s evolving relationship with these creatures. Unfortunately, this thread dissipates, leading the story into another predictable island expedition—a formula that feels stale.

Characters and Their Confounding Choices

This time, the mission unfolds under the direction of Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), a sharp-tongued pharmaceutical representative. His initial goal? To use dino DNA to combat heart disease. While this motivation is a refreshing departure from typical villainy, the film swiftly undermines itself.

Ineffective Ensemble Cast

Krebs enlists Zora Bennet (Scarlett Johansson), along with paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and mercenary Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali). Together, they embark on an adventure that promises thrilling action. Yet, Rebirth comes up short in recapturing the magic of the original.

A particularly baffling subplot introduces a family vacationing across the Atlantic. The characters—Reuben (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), his daughters Isabella (Audrina Miranda) and Teresa (Luna Blaise), and her obnoxious boyfriend Xavier (David Iacono)—prove to be more distracting than engaging, contributing little to the overall narrative.

Fleeting Moments of Tension

While there is a singular scene that reignites the original’s suspense—a tense cat-and-mouse with a T-Rex—these fleeting moments are overshadowed by mediocre CGI and a narrative that seems painfully aware of its contractual obligations.

Lacking Substance

Although Rebirth flirts with intriguing themes—such as the democratization of science—its attempts fall flat, lacking the emotional gravity that characterized earlier entries. Performances are largely forgettable, save for Mahershala Ali’s compelling yet underexplored character.

A Franchise at a Crossroads

In the end, Jurassic World: Rebirth feels more like a corporate checkbox than a meaningful addition to the series. The absence of beloved characters like Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum diminishes any sense of stakes. Perhaps the most poignant reminder rings true: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

Final Thoughts

Jurassic World: Rebirth has hit theaters, but its roar is muffled by a lack of originality and cohesive storytelling. As fans contemplate what the future holds for this franchise, one can only hope that the next installment will heed the call for creativity rather than corporate necessity.
