Get Ready for a Box Office Bonanza! The thrilling combination of Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has transformed this Memorial Day weekend into a record-breaking spectacle, leaving audiences buzzing and box office analysts in awe!
Record-Breaking Memorial Day Weekend
The duo—affectionately dubbed “**Stitpossible**”—alongside three consistent favorites, propelled the box office to a jaw-dropping **$322 million**, the highest figures ever recorded for a Memorial Day weekend.
Lilo & Stitch: A Live-Action Triumph
In a remarkable feat, Lilo & Stitch raked in a staggering **$145.5 million** over the traditional three-day weekend and an estimated **$183 million** for the entire Memorial Day holiday. This places it behind only 2008’s phenomenal Black Panther, which amassed **$242 million** during its four-day debut for President’s Day weekend.
This latest success marks another phenomenal victory for Disney, known for its captivating live-action adaptations of beloved animated classics. Although Lilo & Stitch isn’t as ancient as some of Disney’s other treasures—it hit theaters in 2002—it has remained a significant fan favorite. The film also performed impressively on an international scale, securing **$158 million** overseas and bringing its grand total to an astonishing **$341.7 million** for the weekend!
Setting New Records
This incredible box office achievement not only shattered records but also eclipsed the Memorial Day weekend record set in 2022 by Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, which opened with **$126 million** for the traditional weekend and **$160 million** for the four-day holiday.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise has sprinted into his own record-setting territory with Final Reckoning. This latest installment—deemed the conclusion of the iconic franchise—debuted to a franchise-high **$77 million** over the four-day weekend, strengthening its hold with **$63 million** over the traditional Memorial Day weekend. The previous record holder was Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which opened to **$61 million** in 2018.
After facing stiff competition from last summer’s blockbuster **Barbenheimer**, Final Reckoning made a triumphant comeback, far surpassing the **$55 million** opening of Dead Reckoning: Part 1.
Internationally, the film continued its impressive performance by generating **$127 million**, launching its global revenue to a remarkable **$190 million**.
Box Office Rankings
In the third position, last week’s champion, Final Destination: Bloodlines, added **$19 million** to its domestic total, reaching **$94.6 million** and **$187 million** worldwide. Following its full week at the box office, Bloodlines now stands as the highest-grossing entry in its six-film franchise.
Entering the fray, Thunderbolts* collected **$9.5 million** (or **$12 million** over the holiday), bringing its domestic total to **$171 million** and a global total of **$353 million**. Despite expectations from Disney CEO Bob Iger, the film may struggle to turn a profit due to its hefty **$180 million** budget, as theaters typically take a 50% share of ticket sales.
Lastly, Sinners finished strong in the Top 5, earning **$9.1 million** (or **$11.2 million** over the holiday), resulting in a domestic total of **$259 million** and a worldwide total of **$339 million**!
