A Journey Rooted in Passion: Dr. Richards’ Path to Academia
Dr. Richards’ journey to becoming an esteemed associate professor of marketing and the undergraduate program director is a story of dedication and love for learning. A proud first-generation college student, he initially found his academic home at Baylor and never looked back. "I fell in love with [Baylor], and thankfully was able to make it work out," he shared, reflecting on his experience as an undergrad who worked within the very department he now leads.
His career path is as inspiring as it is diverse. After earning his degree, he ventured into Baylor admissions and spent nearly a decade in strategy consulting. However, a pivotal moment arose when he realized he wanted a career that harmonized with his role as a father. "I was like, ‘I want a career that’s going to be a great career but also going to allow me to be a dad,’" he explained. This quest led him back to academia, culminating in earning his Ph.D. and ultimately returning to Baylor as a revered educator.
Building Connections Inside and Outside the Classroom
Richards is not just a professor; he’s a mentor. His role extends beyond the traditional classroom, exemplified by his leadership in the European Business Seminar Winter Program. This unique learning opportunity allows students to interact with Richards on a more personal level. "Honestly, you get to know each other at a different level,” he remarked, noting how students can address him on a first-name basis, fostering a closer rapport.
Senior student Sam Kumar, who participated in the program, expressed his appreciation: “I am so happy for Dr. Richards and this monumental achievement in his career; it is well deserved. If it wasn’t for Dr. Richards, I promise you I would not have gone on this trip.”

With over a decade of teaching under his belt, Richards finds that the people and the dynamic rhythm of his job are the most rewarding aspects. “At the end of the semester, we’re all shifting to something new. It reminds me that time is short,” he reflected, emphasizing the importance of connection and engagement in education.
