Illinois State Men’s Golf Team Battles for MVC Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa – The excitement was palpable as the Illinois State men’s golf team took to the greens for the first day of the **2025 Missouri Valley Conference Championship**. The Redbirds showcased their skill and determination by shooting impressive rounds of **281 and 290**, positioning them just **one shot behind** the first-day leader, Murray State.

After a challenging weather delay forced the postponement of yesterday’s round due to rain, the teams braved 36 holes today. Murray State clinched the lead with a score of **570**, narrowly edging out the Redbirds’ tally of **571**. Meanwhile, the contenders for the championship include **Belmont** (581), **Southern Illinois** (585), **Drake** (586), **Valparaiso** (586), **Northern Iowa** (587), **Bradley** (596), **Evansville** (602), and **Missouri State** (613) trailing behind.

TJ Barger’s Stellar Performance

Leading the Redbirds on this pivotal day was none other than TJ Barger. With a phenomenal first-round score of **68**, Barger secured **five birdies** and exhibited incredible consistency with **12 pars**. He finished his day strong, sinking two birdies in his final three holes, concluding with an impressive **four-under 68**. Alex McCulla had a balanced day starting with nine consecutive pars before a few struggles led to a score of **74** in the first round. He rebounded impressively, carding **three birdies** and wrapping up his second round with a **two-under 70**, placing him **12th** at **144**.

Will Troy’s Journey

Meanwhile, Will Troy faced challenges on the course, finishing the day with scores of **77** and **74**, landing him tied for **39th overall**. Despite the ups and downs, his determination is a testament to the unpredictable nature of golf.
