Men’s Rowing Claims 14th Place at IRA Championship: A Competitive Final Chapter
Tough Waters Tested BU’s Best
Cherry Hill, N.J.—On Sunday, June 1, the Boston University men’s rowing team wrapped up an exhilarating and challenging season at the 2025 IRA National Championship Regatta, held on the picturesque Cooper River. With fierce competition and unpredictable weather, the Terriers exhibited determination, placing 14th overall in the Ten Eyck Points Trophy standings.
Choppy Performance with Unyielding Spirit
Despite battling choppy waters and persistent wind gusts reaching 26 miles per hour, BU’s rowers showcased resilience and skill. While the conditions were slightly improved compared to the previous day, they remained challenging enough to test every ounce of the athletes’ fortitude.
Varsity Eight’s Fierce Fight
The day began with the Varsity 8+, led by coxswain Emily Slawin and stroked by George Kreidler. Competing in the C Final, the crew fought hard in a tightly contested race with several boats maintaining consistent overlap. With a powerful surge, they momentarily propelled into third position, ultimately finishing fifth with a time of 5:37.890—just two seconds shy of fourth-place Columbia. This performance positioned the Terrier crew at 17th in the nation, highlighting their competitive spirit.
Third Varsity’s Solid Finale
Next up was the Third Varsity 8+, expertly coxed by Hannah Noguchi and stroked by Wynant Hubbard. In a competitive Petite Final, they faced tough adversaries including Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, Cornell, and Northeastern. The boat closed the race in sixth place with a time of 5:57.600, culminating their season with a commendable 12th overall finish.
Second Varsity’s Determined Stand
Completing the weekend’s events, the Second Varsity 8+, coxed by James Smith and stroked by Filippo de Marsanich, also rose to the occasion. They finished the Petite Final in an impressive time of 5:47.250, securing sixth place against formidable competitors such as Princeton, Stanford, Northeastern, Dartmouth, and Penn, cementing their spot at 12th in the country.
A Sentimental Farewell to Senior Rowers
As the racing concluded, the Terrier program bid farewell to its accomplished senior athletes: Bowen de Gouw, Ethan Feldman, Baringer Lovaas, Tucker Thomas, and Hurst Thompson. Their contributions will leave a lasting legacy, and as the team reflects on this season, they eagerly look forward to returning stronger in the fall.
