Meta sues Crush AI over ‘nudify’ app ad violations

Multiple ads featuring explicit deepfake images, including images of celebrities, have made their way to the platform. Meta enforces strict policies against non-consensual intimate imagery, blocking search terms like “nudify” and “undress.” Yet, an analysis by researcher Alexios Mantzarlis revealed that Crush AI ran over 8,000 ads across Meta platforms between fall 2024 and January 2025, with 90% of its traffic originating from Meta platforms.

AI-generated ad content has become a pervasive issue on social media, largely due to Meta’s shift towards automated review processes and community-generated fact-checking. These changes have led to a significant increase in the spread of harmful content.

Legal Protections and Future Directions

Victims of AI-generated nonconsensual intimate imagery have long fought for regulation. The Trump Administration’s Take It Down Act, signed in May, criminalizes such imagery and implements mandatory takedown policies for online platforms. Furthermore, escalating concerns about AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) have raised alarms about the overall safety and regulation of generative AI tools, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

Innovative Approaches to Detection

Alongside the ongoing legal proceedings against Crush AI, Meta has announced plans to develop new detection technology aimed at accurately identifying and removing ads promoting nudify apps. The company is also collaborating with the Tech Coalition’s Lantern program, an initiative focused on child online safety. To date, Meta has reported over 3,800 unique URLs related to nudify apps and discovered multiple networks attempting to promote their services.
