Michaels Expands Its Reach with Joann Acquisition: A Crafting Revolution

Crafting Industry Shake-Up: What You Need to Know

Craft enthusiasts, take note! Michaels, the beloved crafting chain, has made a bold move by acquiring Joann’s intellectual property and private label brands. This strategic decision comes on the heels of Joann’s unfortunate closure after filing for bankruptcy. As a result, Michaels is not only expanding its product lineup but also reinforcing its position as a top destination for creative individuals across North America.

A New Chapter for Michaels

On June 5, it was officially announced that Michaels had acquired Joann’s Big Twist brand. This collection includes popular lines such as Big Twist Value Plus, Big Twist Twinkle, Big Twist Posh, and Big Twist Baby Bear. According to Michaels’ press release, these products are set to hit stores and online platforms later this year, increasing the retailer’s offering to more than 600 new products, which include fabric, yarn, and sewing supplies.

"This acquisition allows us to better serve both new and existing customers, respond to rising demand across categories, and build on our momentum as the destination for creating and celebrating in North America," said David Boone, Michaels’ CEO.

What Led to Joann’s Closure?

Unfortunately, the closure of all Joann stores in Michigan and across the nation by May 31 was a result of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January 2025, marking Joann’s second filing in less than a year. The consumer landscape significantly shifted, leading Michaels to seize the opportunity to absorb valuable assets from Joann.

The Expansion Plan: New Offerings Galore

In a dynamic move towards growth, Michaels plans to enrich its inventory by introducing a range of sewing machines from Brother and Singer, as well as smart irons from Oliso. Additionally, the store’s fabric selection will expand significantly in over 680 locations, with plans to enhance 280 more stores this year.

What’s more, Michaels is poised to increase its yarn assortment by a whopping 25% this year. Customers can look forward to 60 new Loops & Threads yarns available in stores and online, along with yarn collections from popular brands like Bernat, Lion Brand, and Red Heart.

Why is Michaels Making This Move?

Michaels recognized a growing trend among consumers searching for “fabric” and “sewing” on their website over the past year. Responding to customer demands is crucial, and to ease the transition, Michaels has set up a dedicated landing page for former Joann customers, facilitating access to new products and updates.

Boone expressed his excitement, stating, "We’re honored to welcome Joann customers into our creative community and are committed to delivering the selection, value, and inspiration they seek at Michaels."
