Mike Lynch: A Survivor’s Journey and His Fundraising Mission
NORTON, Mass. — For nearly four decades, Mike Lynch has been a household name as an award-winning sportscaster at WCVB-TV, but today he wears a new title with pride: survivor. This journey has not only transformed his life but has also inspired him to raise funds for the very facility that saved it.
A Life-Changing Moment: The Day That Altered Everything
The story begins on a seemingly ordinary evening in May 2022 when Lynch set out for a quick walk around the block. "The Celtics were playing at 8:30. I went for a walk. My wife was walking the opposite direction. She asked, ‘What happened to your right arm?’ I didn’t know. Then, boom, face first into the grass," recalled Lynch.
This sudden turn of events marked the start of a harrowing experience as he was rushed to Mass General after suffering a massive hemorrhagic stroke — a serious brain bleed that would change everything.
The Road to Recovery: Spaulding Rehabilitation
After four days in the hospital, Lynch was transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation in Charlestown. "I don’t know where I’d be without Spaulding," he shared sincerely. "I really, really don’t."
During his time at Spaulding, Lynch experienced an uphill battle of recovery, but he slowly gained confidence each day. "Every day my confidence level went up a notch — every single day," he said. This unwavering belief have been fostered by the dedicated staff, who continually encouraged him with the powerful mantra: “Yes, you can.”
Giving Back: Golfing for a Cause
His inspiring recovery paved the way for a meaningful fundraising initiative. Recently, Lynch participated in a day-long golf tournament at TPC Boston, raising funds for Spaulding. This event was not just about swinging clubs; it was an opportunity to give back to the team that fought with him every step of the way.
"They know exactly — exactly — how far you can go. They push you, but they also understand your limits," Lynch explained. These insights into rehabilitation have been game-changers not only for him but for countless others who seek personalized care.
Impact of the Fundraising Efforts
For 22 years, Spaulding has partnered with TPC Boston, raising nearly $7 million. This money supports rehabilitation efforts and funds vital research aimed at discovering innovative treatment techniques. According to Cara Brickley, Vice President of Operations and Director of Inpatient Therapy at Spaulding, these funds are crucial. "We aim to continually help people get better, faster," she stated.
The Future Is Bright
As Mike Lynch continues his outpatient therapy, he remains committed to his progress. "Until I’m out here playing 18 holes of golf, the progress will continue. I’m dying to get out here and play, and I will someday," he declared with determination.
