UMass Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over George Mason with Thrilling Comeback Victory
FAIRFAX, Va. — In a stunning display of tenacity and skill, the University of Massachusetts (UMass) softball team (8-21, 3-5 A-10) pulled off a doubleheader sweep against George Mason University (13-20, 5-3 A-10), showcasing an unforgettable nine-inning comeback in Game Two this past Saturday.
Game One: A Tactical Tussle
In what was a tense battle of wits, the first game unfolded into a nail-biting affair with neither team able to convert until the seventh inning. The Minutewomen ignited their offense with Riain Keefe, who sparked a rally by singling to lead off the third inning. Despite a strong effort from Riley Kairer, who also kicked off the fourth inning with a hit, UMass found themselves unable to capitalize on early scoring chances.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the seventh when Odyssey Torres broke through for UMass with a stunning solo home run, sending the ball soaring over the outfield fence. The excitement crescendoed as Angie Rama followed up with a single, placing runners in scoring position. A timely RBI single from Keefe brought in the crucial run, establishing a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots managed to respond with a lone run in the bottom of the seventh, but Julianne Bolton proved resolute on the mound, striking out four batters and allowing only one earned run across her seven-inning outing. UMass held on for a tight 2-1 victory, perfectly setting the stage for an adrenaline-pumping Game Two.
Game Two: The Thrilling Comeback
As the second game unfolded, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation. Fittingly, it turned into a classic nine-inning thriller, showcasing the heart and determination of the Minutewomen. Hannah Streicher delivered a remarkable performance in the circle, throwing all nine innings, racking up six strikeouts, and allowing just one earned run.
Despite an early stumble—George Mason scored in the first inning off a ground out that brought home DeRosa—UMass quickly rallied. Brooke Musch tied the contest in the third with a single, followed by a powerful RBI double from Keefe, leveling the score at 1-1.
Things took a turn in the fifth inning when the Patriots capitalized on a throwing error, which allowed two runs to cross the plate. With the scoreboard reading 5-1 in favor of George Mason as they headed into the final inning, it seemed UMass had a mountain to climb.
But the resilient Minutewomen were undeterred. Freshman Katharine Heslin launched her first career home run, reigniting her teammates' spirits. Musch and Keefe then connected back-to-back on singles, allowing Musch to score off a wild pitch. Suddenly, the score was a manageable 3-5.
In an electrifying finish, Lily Woodworth became the hero as she tied the game at 5-5 with a clutch 2-RBI single, leaving fans on the edge of their seats and forcing the game into extra innings.
With the momentum clearly on UMass’s side, Woodworth struck again in the ninth inning, driving in Musch with a well-placed single that floated over the first baseman's head. Streicher then took the mound with fierce determination, finishing off George Mason in the bottom of the ninth to secure a phenomenal 6-5 victory.
