Ohio Food Banks Face Major Funding Cuts Amid Rising Demand
COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the demand for food assistance skyrockets across Ohio, food banks are bracing for significant funding cuts outlined in the proposed Republican state budget for 2025-2026. This situation poses a dire challenge for communities already grappling with unmet hunger needs.
Rising Needs vs. Shrinking Resources
Last year, nearly 16 million visits were recorded at Ohio’s network of food pantries, according to the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. “The need for food assistance is at an all-time high,” states Kristin Warzocha from the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. With inflation impacting household budgets and rising food prices, millions in the state are seeking relief.
A Tough Year Ahead
The climate is grim, as Warzocha prepared for a challenging year ahead. “We anticipate a reduction of up to 8 million pounds of food next year, which translates to a 15% decrease in resources— without any additional public or private support.” The stakes are high, and any loss of food aid could leave countless families hungry.
Current Funding Landscape
Ohio food banks are currently receiving $32.5 million from the state. While this figure represents a temporary boost, it pales compared to the approximately $24.5 million typically allocated since 2019. Previously, a one-time supplement of $7.5 million was granted due to pandemic-related needs, but the proposed budget plans to revert this funding back to pre-pandemic levels.
Advocating for Change
Food banks requested approximately $30 million this year, with hopes of addressing inflation and increasing demand. Unfortunately, their plea fell on deaf ears in the governor’s, House’s, and Senate’s proposed budgets, leading to a staggering 23% reduction in funding from fiscal year 2025 to 2026.
The Children’s Hunger Alliance (CHA) is also witnessing unprecedented demand. Their weekend meals program has tripled in size and is now marred by long waitlists. Despite their request for additional funding, bills passed by both the House and Senate propose cutting their budget from $7.5 million to $5 million.
A Call to Action
Hunger prevention advocates are hopeful that state lawmakers will reconsider their stance before the budget is finalized at the end of June. Unfortunately, as legislative leaders enter conference committees to negotiate, it appears that hunger issues are not prioritizing food security.
Budget Priorities Under Scrutiny
The proposed budget also favors a $600 million grant to the Cleveland Browns and offers a tax cut benefiting Ohio’s wealthiest residents. Senate President Rob McColley acknowledged the importance of "big items" in the budget, including a controversial 2.75% flat income tax. This significant tax shift raises concerns about the potential $1 billion loss to the state’s general revenue fund.
Expert Opinions
Critics are raising alarms over the implications of such budget cuts. State Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney, the leading Democrat on the Finance Committee, noted that the Senate’s budget is particularly damaging. “The Senate is where we’re seeing real cuts to existing programs,” she commented.
House Speaker Matt Huffman remains steadfast in supporting the tax cut, stating, “Any reduction like that needs to be coupled with… where are the spending cuts going to be?” The conscience of the Ohio budget remains a topic of heated discussion.

Even with funding challenges on the horizon, Warzocha remains determined. “We’re reaching out to our community, and our community is responding,” she remarked. No one should go hungry, and she plans to fight for resources, regardless of state and federal limitations.
