One notable victim, Lorraine Bromley, thought she was making a legitimate purchase. “I said, ‘I’m interested,’” Bromley recalled. The impersonator responded, requesting a deposit. “You never think that someone’s going to hack into your friend’s account and act like them to ask you for money,” she lamented.
