Ooooh la, La Baule: Riding the Waves of Gossip and Glory

A Tantalizing Truth

In the world of equestrianism, there’s an old saying that rings true: “One can be brilliant at riding a horse or brilliant at love-making, but not both.” Somehow, I find myself leaning towards the latter. After all, who could resist tossing out this clever gem?

In truth, I might have invented this saying, an astute observer of the intrigue that swirls around equestrian life. Whenever I step foot in France, the air is thick with juicy gossip about the love lives of European riders—an art form seldom encountered in North America, where whispers are saved for scandalous escapades behind the bar.

But in La Baule, gossip takes on a celebrity flair.

La Baule: A Jewel on the French Coast

This is not just any horse show; we’re at the much-acclaimed *CSIO5 Nations Cup in La Baule, France. The second time at this enchanting venue feels like déjà vu—it’s where dreams, excitement, and, yes, a sprinkling of drama come to life. Established in 1960, this idyllic seaside town transforms into a bustling hub of equestrian enthusiasts. With lush grass rings**, enthusiastic crowds, and the air electric with anticipation, it’s no wonder this show is deemed a must-visit.

Finding parking? A mini-adventure. As I confidently claim a spot of questionable legality, I can’t help but chuckle at my odds. Parking chaos? It’s a price worth paying for a front-row seat to the high-stakes drama unfolding on the field.

Press Credentials and Bold Aspirations

Decked out with my press wristband and an owner’s lanyard from the FEI Jumping Owners Club, I find myself inching closer to the action. Within the Rider’s Restaurant, I’m mere breaths away from the world’s top riders. I can’t resist the urge to flirt with the idea that these phenomenal athletes might one day ride one of my horses. A bold proclamation, considering the gestation period of breeding champions!

Yet, my day is spent capturing stunning moments of other riders, my camera filled with dreams of equestrian glory.

The First Round: Surprises and Champion Aspirations

With the American flag left at home (because, let’s face it, expectations were low), I gauge the competition. Ireland and Belgium are the favorites, but like any good show, surprises await. A thrilling early round propels Belgium to the top, with Ireland and the UK trailing behind, while Team USA unfortunately finds itself eliminated.

Highlighting standout performances, Tom Wachman from Ireland elevates his game from an 8-fault to a stunning clear round. Brazil’s Luciana Diniz and Pedro Veniss follow suit, moving from the fifth position to a podium finish. But Belgium tumbles, losing their lead due to missteps from two riders—proving that nothing is guaranteed in this unpredictable sport.

Celebrating Victory

The Allure of Gossip and Culinary Delights

Amidst the tight competition, I indulge in the culinary pleasures offered at the public restaurant— fine dining, champagne, and delectable desserts are on the menù. The exquisite food momentarily distracts from the high-stakes drama on the field, but the anticipation of the night’s celebration looms large.

As I observe the intricacies of the course, I can’t shake the excitement. The tricky double jump, noted for its historic significance, harks back to when it was used in the European Championships—a testament to La Baule’s rich equestrian tradition.

A Night to Remember: Cakes, Parties, and Possibilities

With Friday night upon us, a mandatory party awaits at the Barrière l’Hermitage, where the glamorous life of riders continues. Cake, laughter, and camaraderie are on the agenda, yet my journalistic obligations hold me hostage.

Would I have snagged a seat? If only my French friend hadn’t pointed out the lack of an invite—“It’s for VIPs,” I was reminded. With cake lingering indulgently in my thoughts, I resign myself to stealing moments of gossip instead.
