Oklahoma Rowing: A Season of Triumph and Academic Excellence
NORMAN — The spirit of competition ran high at the 2025 SEC Rowing Championship, where Oklahoma Rowing not only showcased incredible athleticism but also celebrated academic success. The Sooners finished an impressive fourth in the competition, capping off the day with a remarkable achievement from graduate student Lale Edil, who was honored as the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Rising to the Challenge
"The tight racing of this regatta, particularly our face-off with Alabama, is a clear testament to the momentum shift this team has undergone this year," said head coach Sarah Trowbridge. Trowbridge’s confidence in her crew is palpable: "This season, our athletes have worked tirelessly to secure their place among the top-25 teams in the nation. They’ve experienced the fruits of their hard work, and we’re committed to making this momentum count!"
Highlights from the Championship
In a morning filled with hope and determination, Oklahoma’s 1V8+ crew demonstrated exceptional prowess, finishing third overall, triumphing over Alabama. Their 2V4+ team also showcased resilience, overtaking Alabama in the final 500 meters and finishing a full seven seconds ahead to clinch third place.
Trowbridge beamed with pride as she spoke of Edil’s accomplishments: "We’re incredibly proud of Lale, not just for her achievements on the water but also for her academic excellence, which will soon extend to the courtroom! She has consistently excelled and is a key player in our first varsity eight that fought hard for that third-place finish at the championship."
The Road Ahead
While the competition at the SEC championship was fierce, there is still more on the horizon. None of the teams are guaranteed an automatic bid to the NCAA Rowing Championship, set to take place at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., from May 30 to June 1. All eyes are now on the possibility of an at-large bid, and the Sooners are eager to continue their journey.
