J.M. Smucker’s Commitment to Clean Labels

On Thursday, J.M. Smucker announced an ambitious plan to eliminate synthetic food colors from all its consumer products by the end of 2027. This pledge will affect a variety of offerings, including popular items like sugar-free fruit spreads, ice cream toppings, and sweet baked goods from the Hostess brand. According to a report by Reuters, Smucker’s commitment also entails a focus on products distributed to K-12 schools, as they aim to stop selling items with synthetic dyes by the 2026-2027 school year.

Conagra’s Sustainable Approach

In parallel, Conagra has pledged to remove artificial colors from products intended for K-12 schools by the same timeline. Additionally, they are working towards eliminating artificial dyes across their entire product portfolio by the end of 2027, as reported by the Associated Press. Notably, many of Conagra’s items already utilize natural alternatives. For instance, the Vlasic kosher pickle spears are colored with turmeric, rather than synthetic Yellow 5, and their frozen veggie sides achieve their vibrant colors through annatto, a plant extract.

Industry-Wide Changes

The commitment to clean labels doesn’t stop there. Earlier this month, Kraft Heinz declared it would begin removing artificial dyes from its domestic products starting in 2027. This is part of a larger trend of companies responding to increasing consumer awareness about the ingredients in their food.

Legislative Impact in Texas

Adding to the momentum, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed legislation requiring warning labels on food and beverage packages that contain 44 common dyes or additives. This legislative move signals the seriousness of public concern regarding artificial dyes. As Scott Faber, a senior vice president at the Environmental Working Group, stated, “When a state as big as Texas requires a warning, that will have an impact on the entire marketplace. No question.”

Government Action on Synthetic Dyes

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA announced a series of measures aimed at phasing out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply. This government action aligns with consumer preferences for healthier food options.
