Redbirds Soar on Day One of Normal Invite: A Recap

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State track and field team kicked off the Normal Invite in electrifying fashion this Friday at the iconic Redbird Track & Field Complex. Athletes showcased their phenomenal skills, setting the stage for an exciting weekend of competitive athletics.

Hammer Throw Highlights

Sophomores shone brightly in the hammer throw events, delivering one exhilarating performance after another. Adison Scott opened the day with a season-best throw of 48.88 meters (160 feet, 4 inches), securing second place and setting the tone for the Redbirds’ efforts. Meanwhile, fellow teammate, Brianna Brodie, a promising freshman, recorded a personal best of 42.82 meters (140 feet, 5 inches), earning an impressive sixth-place finish. Discover her profile here.

On the men’s side, it was Cole Stevens who stole the show, clinching victory in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 55.70 meters (182 feet, 9 inches). Hot on his heels was senior Josh Schmid, securing a strong second-place finish with a throw of 53.50 meters (175 feet, 6 inches). They led a spectacular 1-2 punch for Illinois State in this discipline. Junior Anthony Smith also made his mark, notching fourth place with a commendable throw of 49.25 meters (161 feet, 7 inches). Track Triumphs

In an exciting track event, Junior Nnenna Okpara demonstrated her prowess by clocking in a season-best time of 24.26 seconds in the 200 meters. Illinois State made a remarkable impact here, claiming the top five spots of the race. Freshman K’Leigh Saenz finished just behind her with a personal best of 25.19 seconds while another freshman star, Layla Lerus, followed closely with a time of 25.29 seconds, marking her own personal record.
