Resilient Lopes Triumph as They Defy Odds to Improve to 11-4

The Grand Canyon University men’s tennis team, affectionately known as the Lopes, showcased extraordinary resilience on Wednesday, pulling off a remarkable 4-1 victory against Cal Poly at the GCU Tennis Facility. This triumphant win not only marks their first-ever victory over the Mustangs but also propels their season record to an impressive 11-4.

Battling Adversity: A Testament to Tenacity

Despite entering the match at a disadvantage, with three key players injured, the Lopes demonstrated that resilience is at the core of their team’s identity. The players know all too well how to confront and conquer adversity. GCU head coach Derek Siddiqui emphasized this mentality post-match, reflecting on his team’s ability to respond to challenges. “We just talked about that leading up to this match: that’s what adversity is. How are you going to deal with it? You only have one option if you want to overcome it,” he said.

The Thrilling Matchup: Turning Point Moments

The match began on shaky ground for GCU, leading to a precarious 1-0 deficit after losing a doubles match. However, the Lopes rallied back impressively, with sophomore Brice Patoux and senior Jonathan Da Silva refusing to back down, winning five consecutive games to hand GCU a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. "It’s pretty tough to come back from 4-1, so credit to those guys," said Siddiqui, spotlighting the duo’s crucial contribution.

Once in singles, the Lopes quickly adjusted their strategy. Da Silva, a seasoned competitor from France, lost the first set but swiftly rebounded to secure victory in the next two. “The way the match was going, even though he lost the first somewhat handily, we still felt like we were in it,” Siddiqui noted, highlighting Da Silva’s transformation during the match.

Momentum Builders: Freshman Contributions Shine

The fire ignited by Da Silva’s performance permeated throughout the GCU Tennis Facility. Freshman Diordan Macababbad and senior Paolo Rosati, along with freshman Finbar McGarvey, followed suit, clinching essential wins. Macababbad showcased composure and skill, holding onto his lead to secure a hard-fought victory on Court 6, rounding off a string of crucial wins for the Lopes.

McGarvey reflected on the importance of team support, saying, “Without them, I definitely wouldn’t have won the match.” His words encapsulate the squad’s unwavering spirit and camaraderie, inspiring their collective push against a formidable opponent.

What Lies Ahead: The Lopes’ Journey Continues

As the Lopes bask in the glory of their victorious day, they look ahead to their next challenge against Seattle U on March 28, 2025. With three regular-season duals remaining, their eyes are firmly set on building momentum and solidifying their place in the rankings.

Coach Siddiqui has every reason to be proud as he watches his team evolve and mature throughout the season. "They’ve proven to be able to step up and enjoy the competition, so they’re gaining valuable experience,” he stated, hinting at the bright future ahead for the Lopes.

In conclusion, the Lopes’ remarkable journey this season is a testament to their spirit and resilience. As McGarvey aptly put it, “It’s not been an easy season, but we’re still fighting.” With every match, they take one step closer to their ultimate goal, leaving fans excited for what’s to come.
