Future online Master of Business Administration applicants at Florida State University can pursue a newly created major in alternative investments and finance.

Unlocking New Opportunities with a Major in Alternative Investments

Florida State University is poised to redefine the landscape of finance education with its newly launched Master of Business Administration (MBA) major in alternative investments and finance. This innovative program has been designed to address the urgent need for specialized financial expertise in an ever-evolving investment environment. By leveraging FSU’s nationally ranked programs in finance, real estate, and risk management, this major promises to equip future leaders with a cutting-edge skill set.

The Rise of Alternative Investments

In today’s dynamic financial landscape, investors are steering away from traditional asset classes—such as stocks, bonds, and cash—opting instead for a broader array of alternative investments. This shift can be attributed to several factors:

  • Income Potential: Investors are increasingly drawn to real estate for its robust income opportunities.
  • Startup Support: Angel investors are finding rewards in supporting innovative startup ventures.
  • Higher Risk, Higher Reward: Adventurous investors are adopting strategies involving hedge funds and cryptocurrencies to potentially increase gains.
  • Market Stability: Many are now seeking reduced volatility amid unpredictable stock markets.

According to the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA), the alternative investment sector has surged from comprising just 6% of global investable markets two decades ago to a staggering 24% today. This phenomenal growth signals a fundamental transformation in the financial industry—a shift that FSU College of Business is ready to engage with by preparing the next generation of financial managers.

Preparing for a $29 Trillion Market

“With assets projected to surpass $29 trillion by 2030, alternative investments can no longer be considered a niche market,” asserts Kelsey Syvrud, assistant chair of FSU’s Department of Finance. “Today’s investors are expanding allocations across diverse asset classes, including private credit, private equity, and real assets. The emergence of public-private partnerships and more accessible investment vehicles fuels this growth.”

This expanding market brings forth a multitude of job opportunities for business graduates equipped with knowledge in alternative investments and risk-based decision-making. “As demand for specialized expertise accelerates, professionals well-versed in alternative asset strategies will find themselves primed for high-impact roles,” adds Syvrud.

A Curriculum for the Modern Investor

Kathleen McCullough, senior associate dean for academic affairs, emphasizes that the new major’s curriculum is tailored to meet the growing needs of today’s finance professionals. Most conventional MBA programs focus on traditional finance sectors, leaving a gap in understanding alternative investment assets like private equity, hedge funds, and digital currencies.

“Despite the rapid growth of this market, there is a significant shortage of specialized graduates in alternative investments,” McCullough notes. “Our new major addresses this need, providing a core focus on alternative assets while ensuring students master the essential skills expected of accomplished MBA graduates.”

Designed for Future Leaders

Darren Brooks, MBA program coordinator at FSU, highlights that this curriculum empowers graduates to navigate the challenges of the financial landscape adeptly. “This new major offers students a tailored pathway, aligning their MBA studies with career aspirations in the burgeoning field of alternative investments,” he says.

The program targets a diverse range of candidates, including:

  • Finance Professionals: Those looking to deepen their understanding of private markets and alternative asset strategies.
  • Real Estate and Risk Management Experts: Individuals seeking to enhance their investment management capabilities.
  • Mid-Career Professionals: Those aiming to pivot or advance in high-growth areas like private equity and alternative financing.
  • Aspiring Leaders: Individuals pursuing roles in investment management or family offices who desire a comprehensive business education.
  • Graduate Applicants: Those looking for an alternative to traditional finance degrees.

Application Deadlines

Prospective students should note that the deadline to apply for fall entry into the online MBA with a major in alternative investments and finance is June 1. Applications for the online and part-time MBA formats are accepted until October 1 for spring entry. Importantly, all master’s degree programs are GMAT optional.
