Steve Rapport’s journey took a transformative turn in March 2022 when he arrived in New Orleans to shoot a concert at Tipitina’s. While in town, he visited the cherished Preservation Hall at the suggestion of creative director Ben Jaffe, who had previously reached out about purchasing prints. Rapport described his first encounter with Jaffe and the Preservation Hall crew as an instant connection, noting, "I felt I had found my spiritual home."

A Bold Move to Bywater

Just days after this enlightening trip, Rapport made a life-altering decision—putting his home in Pacifica, California, on the market to purchase a charming residence in Bywater, where artistic expression thrives. Shortly thereafter, he opened a photography gallery in the French Quarter, merging his passion for photography with the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans.

Transformation and Community

The evolution of his living space reflects both personal and creative growth. In 2023, he acquired a pre-Civil War Creole shotgun a few blocks away, showcasing the artistic integrity of the community. His home, alongside four others, will be featured on the 2025 Bywater Home Tour, set for April 6.

Bywater’s Artistic Legacy

Bywater, historically rich and steeped in creativity, has witnessed significant changes since the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Once a haven for struggling artists seeking affordable housing, this neighborhood has become a recognized Historic District. The diverse population is integral to its artistic allure, contributing a unique charm with an eclectic array of restaurants, bars, and galleries.

Rapport notes, "There’s not much of a nine-to-five here. Not many doctors and lawyers." Instead, the community thrives with artists, musicians, and creative visionaries.

With 12-foot ceilings and heart pine flooring, the interior features a modern touch that conciliates with the rich heritage of New Orleans.
