Sabah Faces Surge in Lifestyle Diseases Amid Malnutrition

A Twisted Tale of Nutrition

Sabah is grappling with a worrisome increase in lifestyle-related diseases, revealing a "double burden" of malnutrition. The state finds itself in a precarious position, where communities are battling not only with undernutrition but also excessive calorie intake. This juxtaposition poses serious health risks and raises alarms among health authorities.

The Role of Diet in Health Issues

Dr. Maria Suleiman, the director of the Sabah Health Department, emphasizes that the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes is tied to poor dietary choices and a lack of physical activity.

“We are dealing with a dual challenge—undernutrition on one hand and overconsumption of calories on the other, along with poor dietary choices,” she explained. “Excessive consumption opens doors to health issues like diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension.”

Alarming Statistics: A Call to Action

During a recent event, the Jom Sihat Sandakan programme, Dr. Maria disclosed some staggering statistics that cannot be ignored. In 2024 alone, 298 new stroke cases were recorded at Hospital Queen Elizabeth, with an additional 198 cases at Hospital Duchess of Kent, primarily linked to high blood pressure.

The data indicates a steady rise in chronic illnesses across the state. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey:

  • Diabetes prevalence has surged from 5.7% in 2011 to 8.8% in 2023.
  • Dyslipidemia increased slightly from 31% to 32%.
  • The overweight rate climbed from 28% to 30.9%.
  • Obesity, a significant concern, has almost doubled from 10.6% to 19.5%.

Community Initiatives: A Step Towards Wellness

The Jom Sihat Sandakan initiative was designed to combat these alarming trends through practical measures. The programme featured:

  • Health screenings
  • Nutrition exhibitions
  • Counseling sessions
  • Interactive activities
  • Expert talks

These elements aim to raise awareness and empower the community to embrace healthier lifestyles.

Dr. Maria also highlighted that the initiative is in alignment with the National Nutrition Policy’s goals to enhance sustainable food systems and improve access to nutritious diets.

Moving Forward: A Collective Responsibility

The current situation in Sabah calls for urgent action from all sectors of the community. Individuals must take proactive steps toward better health through improved diets and increased physical activity. With collaboration and awareness, it is possible to combat the rise of lifestyle diseases and pave the way for a healthier future.

By understanding the dynamics of malnutrition and lifestyle diseases, we can work together to create a community that prioritizes health and well-being.
