Senior Day Shutout: A Triumph for GCU Men's Tennis
An Unforgettable Senior Day Performance
The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team delivered an electrifying 4-0 shutout victory against Seattle U on Senior Day, firmly establishing their momentum as they stride toward the postseason. Playing their final dual match at the GCU Tennis Facility, the Lopes celebrated the day with a striking display of skill and determination, bringing their season record to an impressive 12-4. This win marks the third consecutive triumph for the Lopes, who have shown exceptional resilience by winning six of their last seven duals.
Doubles Domination Sets the Tone
From the outset, it was clear that GCU came to compete. The Lopes began the match with a commanding doubles sweep, an outcome that set the tone for the rest of the day. Freshman Finbar McGarvey and senior Paolo Rosati showcased their chemistry on Court 3, obliterating their opponents with a decisive 6-0 victory. Meanwhile, on Court 1, senior Jonathan Da Silva and sophomore Brice Patoux clinched the doubles point with a solid 6-2 win, leaving the Lopes with a 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.
Singles Surge: Lopes Leave No Doubt
Riding the wave of momentum, the Lopes continued to dominate in singles matches. Da Silva, a four-year contributor to the team, triumphed over Seattle U freshman Yuan Lu with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 scoreline. Following suit, Rosati secured his victory against Redhawk senior Jun Sasagawa, finishing with a strong 6-3, 6-2 performance. Patoux then added the finishing touches, defeating Seattle U senior Veselin Kiselkov with a score of 6-2, 6-3, achieving a collective win that saw the matches on Courts 1, 5, and 6 become academic as the 4-0 victory was clinched.
Celebrating the Seniors: Da Silva and Rosati Shine
It was a bittersweet day for the Lopes as they honored their seniors, particularly for Jonathan Da Silva, who reflected on his transformative journey over four years. “It is crazy to see how much the program has grown,” Da Silva expressed. “I am more than proud to be here for four years and show everything I have improved. This has been the best place on Earth.” His accolades speak volumes—he not only secured WAC Freshman of the Year honors but also clinched the championship match for GCU during his debut season.
Rosati, hailing from Rome, Italy, concluded his third season with the Lopes on a high note, holding an impressive 5-2 record in singles and 6-2 in doubles. This performance adds to his legacy as a tenacious competitor who played a vital role during last season’s WAC Tournament championship run.
An Emotional Tribute: Matteo Lugari's Journey
The Lopes also took a moment to honor Matteo Lugari, who, although injured, made a significant contribution earlier in the season by clinching a critical dual match during his GCU debut against New Mexico State. Matched with a 4-5 record in singles this season, his presence was missed on the court but not in spirit during the Senior Day tribute.
Looking Ahead: The Road Ahead for GCU
As GCU head coach Derek Siddiqui reflected on the growth of his senior athletes, he stated, “I realize, 'Wow, I've been with these guys for three years,' and seeing them compete has been incredible.” The Lopes aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming battle on April 3 against San Diego State and a decisive clash against UTSA on April 12 in San Antonio.
