Generosity on Ice: South Shore Fishing Association Fuels First Responder Equipment

A Tradition of Giving Back

MUNISING, Mich. (WLUC) – In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the South Shore Fishing Association has once again cast a line into generosity. The proceeds from their annual fishing derby have culminated in a significant donation aimed at enhancing the safety net provided by local first responders.

Funds to the Frontlines: A Substantial Contribution

On an energizing Thursday afternoon, Joe Hansen, President of the South Shore Fishing Association, proudly presented a check for over $15,000 to Alger County Sheriff’s Rescue 21. This impressive sum was generated from their popular spaghetti dinner and ice fishing derby held back in February, proving that when the community comes together, remarkable things can happen.

Investing in Life-Saving Gear

The funds raised from the derby are earmarked for the purchase of vital rescue equipment, ensuring that first responders are well-equipped to handle emergencies in often unpredictable environments. Hansen emphasizes the necessity of specialized gear, stating, "When people get in a bind, in the woods or in nature, that makes a really unique situation for a rescue opportunity."

He further illustrates the challenge that rescue teams face: "It’s not as simple as driving a vehicle to a site. Sometimes, you need specialized equipment in order to do so." This funding initiative allows the team to acquire the tools essential for effective rescue operations.

A Broader Community Impact

Alger County Undersheriff Steve Blank highlights the diverse array of equipment that will be financed through this donation. From decals and radios for vehicles to essential cold-weather gear, the resources are critical for member safety and functionality. “A lot of the money we use is for equipment for the team members—cold weather gear, summer gear, different boots, gloves, whatever the team needs,” Blank reported.

Growing Stronger Each Year

Hansen expresses pride in the continuous improvement and growth of the fishing derby, noting, "Us being active outdoorsmen, what better opportunity to help raise money for the people that are going to save us if we get in a bind?" With proactive strategies in place, the association has faced challenges like weather conditions head-on, ensuring that each year the event becomes more successful.

Beyond the Derby: A Commitment to Community

The South Shore Fishing Association isn’t just about one event; they host a variety of initiatives throughout the year, including the Spring Shootout and special fishing days dedicated to kids and veterans. These events foster community, promote outdoor activities, and extend their mission of supporting local first responders.

In a world where every dollar counts, the South Shore Fishing Association showcases a model of community commitment and support. If you’d like to get involved or learn more about future events, stay connected to their programs. Together, we can continue to build a community where everyone feels secure and supported.
