Celebrating Excellence: Jaden Akins Named to the 2024-25 Academic All-America® Team

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a thrilling blend of athletic prowess and academic achievement, Michigan State senior men’s basketball star Jaden Akins has earned a prestigious spot on the 2024-25 Academic All-America® Second Team. This accolade, awarded by the College Sports Communicators, underscores not only Akins’ on-court talents but also his dedication to academic excellence.

A Season to Remember: Michigan State’s Triumph on the Court

As the captain of the Spartans, Jaden Akins played an instrumental role in steering Michigan State to an impressive 30-7 overall record. Dominating the competition, the Spartans boasted a 17-3 record in the Big Ten Conference, clinching the regular-season title for an astounding 11th time under the legendary Coach Tom Izzo. Furthermore, the team maintained its legacy by making the NCAA Tournament for the 27th consecutive year, culminating in an exhilarating run to the Elite Eight.

Academic Achievements: Balancing Brilliance on and off the Court

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Akins’ academic journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication, achieving an impressive 3.58 GPA. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in strategic communication while maintaining a commendable 3.50 GPA. His commitment to scholarship is evident in his numerous accolades, including:

  • Three-time recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award at Michigan State’s Student-Athlete Support Services Academic Gala.
  • Recognition on the Dean’s List seven times throughout his academic career.
  • The esteemed Provost’s Award for Future Leaders.

Dominance on the Hardwood

On the court, Akins has proven to be a formidable force. He led the Spartans with an average of 12.8 points per game, secured the fourth-highest number of rebounds on the team with 3.5 rebounds per game, and was the team’s three-point shooter extraordinaire with 58 three-pointers made. His resilience and dedication to the game did not go unnoticed, as he earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Third Team and was honored with a position on the All-Big Ten Defensive Team.

Akins’ stellar career stats stand out vividly. Over 138 games, he scored 1,252 points, solidifying his place at 32nd on the all-time scoring list for Michigan State. His talent shone brightly as he scored in double figures 29 times this year and reached the coveted 1,000-point mark during a pivotal win at Northwestern on January 12.

Legacy of Excellence

Jaden Akins leaves an indelible mark on Michigan State’s basketball history. He stands as one of just 17 players in the program’s storied history to score at least 1,000 points while grabbing 400 rebounds and dishing out 150 assists. His achievement as the first Michigan State men’s basketball player to earn Academic All-America honors since Xavier Tillman Sr. in 2020 adds a feather to his cap, making him the seventh Spartan to attain this distinction and marking MSU’s ninth overall honor.

Conclusion: A Bright Future Ahead

As the spotlight shines bright on Jaden Akins, it’s clear that he embodies the essence of a true scholar-athlete—thriving in both academics and athletics. With a promising future ahead, one can only anticipate the remarkable feats he will continue to achieve, both on and off the court. Congratulations, Jaden!
