OPINION: A Call to Illuminate the Dark Corners of Political Funding
Why Money Matters More Than Support in Politics
Last night, I found myself absent from a critical democratic primary debate—not due to a lack of support or insufficient signatures on my ballot, but because of one glaring factor: money.
The Sponsors and Their Influence
The debate was backed by RWJ Barnabas and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, two titans within New Jersey’s healthcare landscape. These influential organizations significantly contribute to rising healthcare costs that burden everyday residents like you and me.
The Cost of Participation
To even step onto that debate stage required a staggering $600,000 in campaign funds. This amount comes easily for candidates who have affluent donors ready to write hefty checks or those tied to developers constructing luxury apartments. Those who draw from the Wall Street elite or secure backing from firms that skip union labor can effortlessly fill their campaign coffers.
Politicians or Puppets?
This is how the political game is structured today—one where money and influence reign supreme. It creates a landscape where ordinary voices are silenced, disallowing true representation in decision-making spaces. I am running for Governor to change this narrative and empower the voices of the many, not just the wealthy few.
A Campaign Funded by the Many
My campaign is built on a solid foundation of grassroots support. I take pride in saying that my funding comes from hardworking individuals contributing small amounts—$10, $25, or on a good day, maybe even $250. These are the people I will stand up for, and it’s their interests I will represent as Governor.
Valuable Support from the NJEA
I am honored to have the backing of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), which has chosen to invest in our campaign to amplify the voices of working New Jerseyans. Despite the skepticism surrounding Working New Jersey, everyone knows where this funding comes from—a transparent democratic process aimed at countering the overwhelming influence of wealthy corporate and special interests.
The Transparency Challenge
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the SuperPACs and independent expenditures backing my opponents. Current regulations, like those enforced by NJELEC, only require donor disclosures 11 days before the election. By that time, many voters will have cast their ballots, deprived of crucial information about who is funding these campaigns.
Time for Action: Call for Full Disclosure
Today, I am calling on all candidates in this race to advocate for full disclosure of donors to all independent expenditures supporting our respective campaigns. Voters deserve transparency so they can understand the influences affecting their choices. If there is nothing to hide, then it’s time to #ShowUsTheMoney.
Time to “Show Us Your Math”
As educators, we often remind students to “show us their math.” Now, I challenge my opponents to do the same. Let’s unveil who is genuinely backing them and critically assess whose interests they will truly defend in Trenton.
By bringing transparency to light, we can ensure that the future of our politics prioritizes the voices of all citizens rather than just the whispers of wealth. Let’s take the first step together towards a more equitable political landscape.
