Where It All Began: Early Life and Influences
Where did you grow up, and where do you live now?
I grew up just outside London, then spent a decade in New Zealand. My family and I made our way to New York, and we’ve called it home ever since.
How did your creative journey begin?
Growing up in England in the ’90s offered numerous creative outlets. I started writing about music, receiving positive feedback that ignited my passion for creativity.
Who was your creative idol as a young artist?
The legendary Jimi Hendrix was a towering figure for me.
Defining Moments and Influences
A pivotal moment from school?
I dropped out of every school and college I attended. Though unconventional, this path led me to where I am today.
A visual artist or band that inspires you?
Outkast showed me a fresh perspective on being Black and creative that I hadn’t encountered before.
Have you read, watched, or listened to something inspiring lately?
Currently, I’m engrossed in Life and Death on a New York Dance Floor. It explores the early ’80s post-disco scene, focusing on how creative communities thrive.
Highlights of Oriel’s Work
One of your favorite projects?
A collaboration with my partner Gustavo Dorietto for Chobani that envisioned a solarpunk future—a project that became iconic in its own right, capturing the essence of a hopeful tomorrow.
Proud of any recent campaigns?
Absolutely! The collaboration with Streeteasy, titled “Never Become a Former New Yorker”, is a testament to the power of partnership and brand authenticity.
Which artist or creative inspired you in your past?
I deeply admire the work of Howard Gossage. His philosophy emphasized that it’s not just about creating; it’s about the intention behind your work. Sticking to your principles is more impactful than simply chasing profit.
Are there any recent works you find inspiring?
The team at Colenso BBDO consistently impresses me with their ingenuity and creativity.

What would you say is your main strength as a creative?
I excel at decisiveness, converting complex problems into clear, effective creative solutions without over-complicating them.
And your biggest weakness?
I have too many hobbies—it’s a blessing and a curse!

How do you pay it forward?
In 2020, I co-founded ONE School with Bob Isherwood and The One Club For Creativity—an online platform that empowers aspiring Black creatives. Over 250 students have graduated, finding their place in top creative firms.

What would you pursue if you weren’t in advertising?
I would dive headfirst into the multitude of hobbies I wish I had more time to explore.
