This urgent situation begs the question: what can we do? After extensive research, I’ve identified two promising solutions: **food-waste landfill bans** and **dynamic pricing**.

1. Food-Waste Landfill Bans

Food-waste landfill bans serve as a regulatory measure to deter businesses from discarding food waste into landfills. While on paper this sounds like a noble solution, the reality often falls short. Most penalties are simply too weak to compel retailers to change their habits. Moreover, enforcement of these bans can be inconsistent.

Analyzing five different food-waste bans across the United States, my colleagues and I found that **only Massachusetts** successfully diverted food waste from landfills. Why? The state boasts a stringent enforcement mechanism, coupled with a straightforward ban and a robust composting network. This shows that clear policies, when effectively enforced, can truly make a difference.

2. Dynamic Pricing

Another innovative solution on the radar is **dynamic pricing**. Over **10% of food waste** originates from grocery retailers discarding surplus perishables as they approach their expiration dates. By implementing an algorithm that adjusts prices based on inventory levels and expiration dates, grocery stores can significantly reduce waste. Imagine a world where milk nearing its expiration is sold at a lower price while still fresh! Not only does this approach cut down on food waste, but it also makes healthy perishables more affordable for consumers.

Why are grocery stores still relying on static pricing in a dynamic market? This old model is not only inefficient but feels inherently unfair to the consumer. **Dynamic pricing** offers a fresh alternative that benefits everyone involved—from retailers to consumers to the planet.
