BOSTON – This year’s Boston University men’s ice hockey team has faced more ups and downs than a typical roller coaster, with a mix of exhilarating wins and frustrating starts. As they prepare for the Frozen Four, one thing is clear: the resilient Terriers are ready to roll!
Overcoming Inconsistencies: A Character-Building Journey
The Terriers’ journey this season has been marked by their ability to overcome challenges. While they’ve dazzled fans with stunning victories and highlight-reel plays, they’ve also battled through some painful off nights. Despite faced with tough adversities, they have shown remarkable spirit in the NCAA Tournament.
Consider their gripping performance in the Toledo Regional just weeks ago:
- A staggering 15-2 shot deficit against Ohio State in the first period left many questioning whether the Terriers could recover.
- They trailed multiple times—1-0, 2-1, and 3-2—yet rallied with an astounding six-goal eruption to win in impressive fashion.
- And, in the regional final against Cornell, they managed to respond after a late game-tying goal, pulling off a dramatic victory in overtime.
Lessons in Resilience: Voices from the Ice
After the Saturday practice session, junior Devin Kaplan reflected on their last game against Ohio State, stating, "It was definitely a roller coaster of emotions. We focused on managing setbacks and regrouping. That shows the resiliency of our group, which is invaluable moving forward."
Senior Matt Copponi added to this sentiment, commending his teammates for their ability to bounce back quickly. While he played a pivotal role in the match against Ohio State, scoring a crucial equalizer just seconds after the Buckeyes regained the lead, he acknowledged the chemistry between him and linemates Jack Harvey and Jack Hughes as critical to their success.
"Playing with good players like Harvey and Hughes makes it easier. You always know where to find them on the ice," Copponi shared, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in high-pressure situations.
A Nail-Biter Against Cornell: The Turning Tide
As pressure mounted in the nail-biter against Cornell, Copponi was once again at the heart of the action, scoring the goal that would shift the momentum in BU’s favor. The play showcased exceptional skill, with freshman Cole Hutson driving the puck through dense defensive traffic.
“When Cole has it, good things happen,” Copponi noted, demonstrating how trusting teammates can amplify individual performance.
The Quest for Glory: One Step Closer to Championship
The Hockey East conference sent six teams to the national tournament, an impressive feat. However, it was BU that emerged as the sole representative moving on to St. Louis. Kaplan commented on the unpredictable nature of the playoffs, stating, "In these one-game situations, anything can happen. That’s playoff hockey."
Their next challenge lies ahead against Penn State, who enters the Frozen Four with a force of offensive prowess similar to the Terriers. Copponi acknowledged their formidable skill: "They’re a really skilled team with the capability to score quickly."
Looking Towards St. Louis: A Shared Dream
As BU heads to St. Louis, Kaplan is proud to be part of a program rich with tradition and leadership. Under head coach Jay Pandolfo, a former BU player himself, the team has maintained its competitive edge across the seasons.
“It’s incredible to see how the program has kept us focused and poised. St. Louis promises to be an exciting environment, and we’re ready to make our mark!”
For Copponi, this Frozen Four holds special meaning as he’ll experience it for the first time after transferring from Merrimack College. "Playing for BU offers a chance for greatness. I’m eager to contribute and make the most of this opportunity."
The Final Countdown: Ready to Roll!
As the resilient Terriers prepare for their upcoming challenge in St. Louis, they remain focused on their ultimate goal: a sixth national championship. With determination, resilience, and teamwork fueling their drive, fans can expect an electrifying performance from BU on Thursday night.
