Experience the Vibrance of Thai Culture at the Portland Thai Festival This Weekend
Portland is buzzing with excitement as the highly anticipated Portland Thai Festival returns this weekend, inviting food lovers and culture enthusiasts alike to indulge in a rich tapestry of flavors and traditions. This year’s festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Thai cuisine and cultural heritage.
A Culinary Showcase in the Heart of Portland
With over 125 Thai restaurants in the metro area, Portland has become a haven for Thai food aficionados. Nick Stanley, the Thai honorary consulate general in Portland, emphasizes the significance of Thai cuisine in enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourist destination. "You can argue that Thai cuisine is really one of the cornerstones of what makes Portland competitive with regard to tourism," he stated.
This Saturday, prepare to immerse yourself in a culinary extravaganza at The Yard Apartments in Central Eastside. The festival will take place over two days—Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.—and is free to attend, making it accessible for all who wish to partake in this celebration.
What to Expect: Food, Dance, and Community Spirit
The festival will kick off with remarks from notable figures including Mayor Keith Wilson and representatives from the Thai Consulate in Los Angeles. Last year’s inaugural festival attracted more than 10,000 attendees, showcasing the diversity and abundance of Thai food in Portland, a sentiment echoed by Sith Chaisurote, president of Land and Houses USA. "The responses from the visitors were great, and the vendors were also very successful,” he shared.
Among the delightful array of vendors, around 80% will make a comeback, including Sarah Jansala, chef and owner of Kati Thai Vegan. Jansala fondly reminisces about the sense of community fostered by last year’s event, stating, “It’s like bringing back my childhood memory… on the streets of Thailand, we have street food festivals pretty much every weekend.” This year, expect to savor vegan-friendly dishes like curry puffs, fresh spring rolls, and the ever-popular mango sticky rice.
More Than Just Food: Culture and Wellness
But the Portland Thai Festival is not just about food—it’s a vibrant celebration of culture. This event will feature traditional Thai dance performances by the Thai Association of Oregon and exhilarating Muay Thai boxing demonstrations from a local Seattle group.
Moreover, there will be a focus on wellness, as vendors like the Oregon Meditation Center showcase practices that help tackle modern challenges like anxiety and depression. “Health and wellness is also important,” Chaisurote said.
Celebrate Cultural Diversity
The Portland Thai Festival aims to highlight the contributions of the Thai community while celebrating the rich diversity of cultures in Portland. Chaisurote emphasizes the festival’s role in fostering connections: “It’s good for all people to get together—not just Thai, but those who appreciate food and cultural diversity.”
