Discover the Culinary Delights of the Twin Cities: This Week’s Must-Try Dishes
If you think Tuesday lunch breaks are mundane, think again! This week, our food writers indulged in some extraordinary culinary experiences right here in the Twin Cities. From innovative Indian street food to a refreshing Mediterranean grain bowl, here are the top five flavors that tantalized our taste buds.
1. Culinary Shots at Curry Corner
I have a confession to make: during a recent lunch escapade, my co-worker and I boldly indulged in culinary shots—and no, these weren’t your typical liquor-infused sips. At Curry Corner, the newly minted Indian eatery on E. Hennepin in Minneapolis, we dove into delightful pani puri shots.
A Burst of Flavor
For just $11, you can enjoy six perfectly crisp, semolina shells filled with chickpeas and potatoes. While these treats would stand out on their own, the real magic happens with the addition of a tamarind-forward liquid that is poured on just before consumption. The robust combination of sweet, sour, and tang made it a sensory adventure—one that’s meant to be savored in a single gulp.
If you’ve ever experienced street food in India, you already know that the fun comes with the challenge. “It’s a favorite when visiting family,” one diner remarked, as we couldn’t help but share a laugh over our first round of shots. If you’re in the neighborhood, make sure to stop by Curry Corner for a truly enjoyable experience. (Nancy Ngo)
2. The Mediterranean Grain Bowl at The Buttered Tin
When the weather can’t seem to make up its mind, grain bowls become the perfect meal option. The Buttered Tin’s Mediterranean grain bowl ($18) is the ideal dish to transition between seasons.
A Flavorful Medley
Built on a hearty base of brown rice and quinoa, this bowl bursts with a colorful array of vegetables—cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, peppers, edamame, giardiniera, and seasoned roasted cauliflower. This garden-fresh medley delivers a punch of both color and flavor, which are only elevated by a sprinkle of salty olives and feta. To add delightful crunch, crispy chickpeas provided the finishing touch.
For those seeking extra protein, you can add chicken for $6 or salmon for $9—but be warned, the flavors are so vibrant that you might just forget the tzatziki packed with creamy dill—a delightful gem hidden at the bottom of the bowl. As an added bonus, this dish is completely gluten-free.
Savory Temptations Await
Though I came for the grain bowl, I simply couldn’t resist grabbing a Lowertown Twinkey ($3.50) and a towering cheddar buttermilk thyme biscuit ($4.50) for later. Lucky for you, if you’re unable to make it to one of their two locations, the Buttered Tin’s Freshly Frozen line of rolls and pies can be found in many local supermarket freezers. (Nicole Hvidsten)
3. Sweet Meets Savory at Penny’s Coffee
There’s nothing quite like a cozy coffee shop to warm your spirits on chillier days. At Penny’s Coffee, I discovered their enchanting Maple Bacon Scone. Imagine tender scone layers kissed with a drizzle of sweet maple glaze, paired with crunchy bacon bits for the perfect sweet and savory harmony. For $3.75, I enjoyed a light treat that made my afternoon brighter.
4. Comfort in a Bowl at Hai Hai
Craving something comforting yet exotic? Hai Hai’s Pho is where you should head. This Vietnamese noodle soup is a warm hug for the soul. Braised beef, aromatic herbs, and delicate rice noodles create a dish so rich in flavor, it’s hard to get through a bowl without wanting seconds. A standard bowl costs roughly $12, but the joy it brings is priceless.
5. Tacos with a Twist at Taquiera La Hacienda
Rounding out our top five is the Baja Fish Taco from Taquiera La Hacienda. Priced at $4.25 each, these crispy fish tacos are topped with zesty cabbage, fresh pico de gallo, and a drizzle of lime crema that truly takes freshness to another level. Pair one (or three) with a house-made salsa, and you’ll wish every day was Taco Tuesday!
