LAWRENCE, Kan. — Day 1 of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships was nothing short of electrifying for the Arizona Wildcats. Erin Tack made headlines by breaking the program’s javelin record, while Antonia Sanchez Nunez showcased her speed in the 400m hurdles, propelling herself to the finals.
A Stellar Start for the Wildcats
The Wildcats’ men’s team managed to secure six points, tying for seventh in the standings, while the women’s team earned ten points, setting themselves firmly in fourth place after an exciting day at Rock Chalk Park.
Historical Moments
Zach Landa made his mark in history, becoming the first Arizona athlete to score points in the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He achieved this milestone with an impressive eighth-place finish in the men’s hammer throw.
Jesse Avina added to the excitement, capturing fourth place in the men’s javelin with a remarkable final throw of 66.92m (219-7), matching his previous performance at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships last season.
Sanchez Nunez Steals the Spotlight
The standout performance of the day came from Antonia Sanchez Nunez, who breezed through her heat in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 56.53 seconds to secure her spot in the finals at 5:15 p.m. MST on Saturday. This impressive feat made her the only athlete from the Wildcats to finish in first place on day one.
A Strong Showing
In addition, Yan Vazquez finished seventh in the 400m hurdles with his season-best time of 50.87 seconds, earning him a place in the finals on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. MST.
McKenna Watson and Jade Brown both qualified for the 200m final, finishing fifth and seventh respectively, setting the stage for a thrilling competition on Saturday.
