PETALING JAYA:

In a surprising twist, **the branding of “UMDAP Mantap”**—championed by DAP deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming—may not be resonating as intended among the **voters of Ayer Kuning**. According to analysts from **Ilham Centre**, this strategic branding initiative could be backfiring, raising questions about its effectiveness.

The Unintended Fallout of Branding Strategies

Ilham Centre’s recent survey indicates that the **“UMDAP Mantap”** label has provoked **more negative sentiments** than anticipated. The think tank emphasized that the initial approach would have benefitted from the machinery and experience of **Barisan Nasional** (BN).

Understanding the Sensitivity of Political Alliances

The **Umno-DAP alliance**, previously marked by fierce rivalry, remains a highly sensitive topic among **Malay voters**. Ilham Centre highlighted the delicate nature of this partnership, which could impact **voter perception** and decisions during the upcoming by-elections.

Strategic Silence Amidst Turbulent Waters

Interestingly, BN has taken the unusual step of remaining silent in response to the opposition’s criticisms of the Umno-DAP relationship. This tactic stands in stark contrast to **Amanah’s** active defense against **Perikatan Nasional’s** attacks, showcasing the complexity of current political strategies.

The Racialization of Local Issues

On a different note, **Perikatan Nasional** has opted to race-bait local controversies, such as the pollution from pig farms, to galvanize **Malay voters**. **Ilham Centre** remarked that while such narratives carry inherent risks, they appear to resonate within the specific demographics of **Ayer Kuning**, where Malays constitutes **55.97%** of the **31,940 voters**.

A Competitive By-Election Awaits

As the spotlight shifts to the by-election, candidates from various parties gear up for a three-way contest. **BN’s Yusri Bakir (Umno)** will face off against **PN’s Abd Muhaimin Malek (PAS)** and **Parti Socialis Malaysia’s KS Bawani**. This follows the passing of Umno assemblyman **Ishsam Shahruddin**, who previously secured the seat with a **2,213-vote** majority in a five-cornered battle.

The political landscape in Ayer Kuning is more than just a competition; it is a **testing ground** for branding strategies, voter perceptions, and the evolving narrative of alliances. As we approach election day, the implications of these branding choices will become increasingly evident, shaping the future of political engagement in the region.
