A Stellar Performance Amidst the Challenges

The University of Michigan women's golf team faced down Mother Nature and delivered an impressive performance at the Chattanooga Classic, held at the prestigious Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee. Over the course of the two-day tournament, the Maize and Blue rallied to finish eighth out of 16 teams, posting a total score of 915.

Mara Janess: The Rising Star

Leading the charge was redshirt sophomore Mara Janess, who dazzled onlookers with a career-low round of 69 (-3) in the final showdown. This remarkable performance not only marked her first time breaking the dreaded 70-stroke barrier but also secured her a coveted spot in the top ten. Janess wrapped up the tournament with an impressive total of 221, tying for eighth place overall.

Round-by-Round Breakdown

Round 1: Janess opened the tournament with a challenging 78 but remained tenacious.

Round 2: She rebounded with a solid 74 (+2), displaying resilience and skill under pressure.

Final Round: The climax of her efforts came with that spectacular 69 (-3), complete with four birdies and thirteen pars.

Tournament Dynamics

Due to threatening weather conditions, this year’s event was condensed into two days of intense competition. The team faced misfortunes early, finishing the first day in 13th place after a 311 score. However, the Wolverines mounted a comeback with a 306 in the second round, highlighted by the contributions of sophomore Grace Wang, who fired a respectable 76.

As they entered the final round, the Michigan squad was determined to improve their standing, and Janess wonderfully led that charge. The team’s final round score of 298 propelled them past four competitors, securing an impressive T8 finish.

Alongside Janess, junior Sydney Sung finished T36 with a total of 229, while Lauren Sung and Grace Wang also played vital roles, finishing T51 and in the middle of the pack, respectively.
