Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: WFP Exhausts Food Aid Amid Prolonged Blockade

In a devastating turn of events, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it has completely depleted all food stocks in Gaza due to a seven-week blockade imposed by Israel. This dire situation has forced humanitarian kitchens to rely on their dwindling supplies, with the last remaining food deliveries now finished.

Since March 2, Israel has restricted humanitarian aid, resuming military operations shortly after a two-month ceasefire collapsed. This blockade is being justified as a strategy to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages. However, the United Nations emphasizes that under international law, Israel is obligated to ensure the flow of humanitarian supplies to the 2.1 million Palestinians living in Gaza.
According to statements from Israeli officials, the country claims compliance with these laws, asserting that there is no food shortage. Yet, as the WFP notes, this blockade has brought Gaza’s fragile food systems to their knees.
Catastrophic Consequences: Worsening Malnutrition
By the end of March, the 25 bakeries supported by the WFP were forced to shut down due to the lack of wheat flour and cooking fuel. Moreover, family rations, initially provided to last two weeks, have also been exhausted. The result is a rapid increase in malnutrition rates, particularly alarming among vulnerable populations.
The UN’s recent screenings revealed that out of 1,300 children, over 80 cases of acute malnutrition were identified—a staggering two-fold increase from previous counts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Gaza has reached an "awful and grim moment." WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has stressed that the aid blockade must urgently end, emphasizing that lives depend on it.

The WFP has reiterated that the current blockade is the longest Gaza has ever experienced. Food prices have skyrocketed by up to 1,400%, raising serious nutrition concerns for multiple vulnerable groups, including young children, pregnant women, and the elderly. “People are running out of ways to cope,” the agency warns, as it urges all parties to prioritize civilian needs and allow aid to enter Gaza immediately.

In a cruel twist of fate, the WFP holds more than 116,000 tonnes of food assistance—enough to nourish one million people for up to four months—waiting at aid corridors. However, it remains trapped until Israel reopens Gaza’s borders.
As WFP Country Director Antoine Renard explains, nearly 80% of the population has been displaced due to ongoing conflict. “These kitchens are essential for people to have a basic meal,” he asserts, yet they can currently only meet 25% of daily food needs for half the population.
Desperate Measures for Survival
With food stocks nearing depletion, residents are resorting to bartering essential items or even selling their belongings just to access remaining supplies. The scale of begging in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, with many unable to help others in need. “The desperation is really, really severe,” states humanitarian access manager Gavin Kelleher.
Criticism of the Blockade
In an attempt to fend off international criticism, particularly from the UK, France, and Germany—who have deemed the blockade “intolerable”—Israeli officials maintain that over 25,000 lorries carrying nearly 450,000 tonnes of aid entered Gaza during the ceasefire.
However, the reality on the ground remains bleak, with the humanitarian situation deteriorating rapidly in light of continued hostilities.
