Williams Prepares to Shine at the 29th Arnold Palmer Cup

RIDGELAND, S.C. – Get ready for an exciting week of golf! Vanderbilt University’s own Wells Williams is gearing up to proudly represent the United States at the 29th Arnold Palmer Cup, scheduled from Thursday to Saturday at the prestigious Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina.

What is the Arnold Palmer Cup?

The Arnold Palmer Cup is not just any tournament; it’s a celebration of collegiate golf, named after the legendary golfer Arnold Palmer himself. This annual team competition pits the United States against an international team, with each squad comprising 12 men and 12 women. Since its inception in 1997, this event has become a highlight of the amateur golf calendar.

Event Schedule

  • Thursday: Mixed four-ball matches
  • Friday: Foursome and mixed foursome matches
  • Saturday: Single matches

With tee-off times set for 7:30 a.m. CT on Thursday and Friday, and an early start at 6:30 a.m. CT for Saturday’s final rounds, the competition promises to be fierce and thrilling! The winning team is determined by the most points accrued at the end of the four rounds. Interestingly, if the two sides happen to tie, the current holder retains the coveted Cup.

A Historic Opportunity for Williams

This marks Wells Williams’ first time donning the Red, White, and Blue at the Palmer Cup, adding an exciting chapter to Vanderbilt’s illustrious history in this prestigious tournament. Over the years, 12 Commodores have represented the university at the Arnold Palmer Cup. Notably, Scott Limbaugh, head coach of the Vanderbilt men’s golf team, led Team USA in 2019. Just last year, Vanderbilt seniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris made history by helping the U.S. secure its first victory on international soil since 2018.

Williams’ Remarkable Journey

Wells Williams is riding high after an exceptional junior season with the Commodores, earning a Golfweek All-American honorable mention and a spot on the All-SEC second team. His outstanding performance has placed him among the elite, as he became only the sixth Commodore in history to capture multiple tournament victories in a single season.

Key Highlights of Williams’ Season:

  • Medalist honors at the 2025 Southwest Invitational and the 2025 Mason Rudolph Championship.
  • An impressive scoring average of 70.65 over 37 rounds.
  • A remarkable three-round score of 5-under 208 at the Southwest Invitational.
  • He achieved a 54-hole score of 198 at the Mason Rudolph Championship, tying for the fifth-lowest score in program history.
