University of Missouri Women’s Golf Shatters Records at SEC Championship Opening Round
The University of Missouri women’s golf team has entered the record books in spectacular fashion, achieving their best round ever at the SEC Championship. This remarkable performance was highlighted by junior Melanie Walker, who etched her name into the history of the program with a stunning score in the first round.
A Glorious Day for Walker and the Tigers
In a fiercely competitive field boasting ten top-25 teams nationally, Melanie Walker emerged as a true standout, finishing the day with a phenomenal two-under par 68. Her impressive round placed her in the top-10, tied for ninth at the end of day one. Walker’s score ties her with former Tiger Jessica Yuen, who achieved the same tally in 2017, marking it as the lowest score by a Mizzou player at the SEC Championship.
As Walker navigated the challenging course, she found scoring opportunities with remarkable ease, concluding her day with seven birdies. This included an impressive streak of three consecutive birdies on holes 13, 14, and 15, a feat that showcased her skill and determination as she tackled the competition head-on.
Strong Support from Teammates
Not to be overshadowed, two other Tigers also showcased their talent amidst the tournament’s full roster of 80 golfers.
Sophomore Fleur van Beek finished the day at two-over par 72, ranking 38th overall. Her consistent play featured 14 pars, demonstrating her reliability on the course.
- Freshman Alexandra Berglund had a solid outing as well, carding a three-over par 73 to secure the 48th position. Her performance included an eagle on the par-4 first hole, sparking excitement early in her round.
Senior Ffion Tynan also gave it her all, scoring a five-over 75 to finish in 62nd place. Tynan enjoyed an eagle on the front nine, specifically on the par-5 seventh hole, contributing to a remarkable day for the team.
Tigers Set Record and Eye Match Play Contention
As the round concluded, the Tigers found themselves in a four-way tie for 12th place at +8, just five shots away from match play contention. Notably, the team’s total score of 288 has now set a new program record for the SEC Championship, surpassing the previous record of 292 achieved in the final round of 2017.
In a formidable display of skill, No. 4 South Carolina currently leads the tournament with an impressive score of -14.

With the second day of the SEC Championship on the horizon, the Tigers will be ready to tee off at 8 a.m. CT. Fans and supporters are eager to see if the incredible energy and record-breaking momentum will propel Mizzou to new heights in this prestigious championship.
