Women’s Tennis Battles Hard but Falls to Cal Poly in Conference Showdown

A Heartbreaker in the Court: Highlights from the Match

HONOLULU – The excitement of women’s collegiate tennis reached fever pitch on a brisk afternoon as the #70 University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team faced a formidable opponent in #51 Cal Poly. Despite an electrifying atmosphere and a hard-fought effort on their home turf, the Rainbow Wahine fell short, marking their record at 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the Big West, while the Mustangs improved to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Doubles Action: A Tough Start

The match kicked off with doubles action, where the Rainbow Wahine struggled to find their rhythm. Cal Poly swiftly claimed the doubles point by securing victories on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, putting the home team in a challenging position right from the start. The early lead proved crucial for the Mustangs as they established momentum heading into singles play.

Singles: A Clash of Titans

As the singles matches unfolded, the intensity on the court reached new heights. Ana Vilcek, a powerhouse for the Rainbow Wahine, quickly leveled the score with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kennedy Buntrock. However, the momentum was short-lived as the Mustangs responded aggressively, claiming the next three matches—a strategy that clinched the overall win at 4-1.

  1. Natalie Lynch delivered a polished performance against UH’s Joelle Lanz, securing a 6-2, 7-5 win on the No. 6 court.
  2. On the No. 4 court, UH’s Emma Forgac showcased her skill by winning the opening set against Alexandra Ozerets, but ultimately succumbed to a hard-fought battle that concluded 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in favor of Cal Poly.
  3. The match-clinching moment came from Peyton Dunkle of Cal Poly, who defeated UH’s Peppi Ramstedt in a dramatic three-set showdown, finishing 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

A Glimmer of Hope from Homolkova

While the overall result leaned decisively in favor of the Mustangs, Nikola Homolkova emerged as a shining star for the Rainbow Wahine. In a thrilling encounter against Romane Mosse, Homolkova displayed incredible grit and tenacity. After dropping the first set, she rallied back to take the match 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-2, providing a silver lining to an otherwise tough day for the squad.

The Final Verdict: Looking Ahead

As the dust settled on this battle, UH’s Makeilah Nepomuceno also put on a valiant performance, narrowly losing a competitive match to Jessica MacCallum with scores of 6-2, 6-7 (0), 6-4. Although the Rainbow Wahine came up short against Cal Poly, their resilience was evident.

Looking forward, the team is set to celebrate Senior Day against the #50 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, March 29, at 11:00 A.M. HT. This match will not only mark the closing of their home schedule but also pay tribute to four extraordinary seniors: Ana Vilcek, Nikola Homolkova, Sheena Masuda, and Peppi Ramstedt.
