West Virginia Dominates Houston: A Historic 10th Consecutive Win

In an electrifying showdown at Schroeder Park, the West Virginia University baseball team showcased their prowess on the diamond, completing a commanding sweep of Houston with an 11-4 victory on Sunday. This triumph not only marks West Virginia’s 10th consecutive win, propelling their record to an impressive 30-4 overall and 10-3 in the Big 12 conference, but also cements their status as one of the nation’s top teams.

A Day of Power Hitting and Stellar Pitching

Junior slugger Logan Sauve emerged as the standout player of the game, launching two powerful home runs and driving in four runs. His offensive display was complemented by senior Kyle West, who contributed a home run, a double, and two RBIs, proving that the Mountaineers’ attack is as relentless as ever. Senior Grant Hussey also marked a significant milestone, celebrating his 200th career game by racking up two hits.

On the mound, graduate student Jack Kartsonas made a significant impact in his first start of the season. He delivered a masterful performance, tossing 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing a mere two hits while striking out five batters. Adding to this strong showing, senior Reese Bassinger stepped in for a scoreless inning of relief, lowering his impressive season ERA to 2.27.

Key Moments of the Game

The Mountaineers’ scoring onslaught began in the first inning with Kyle West launching a two-run homer—his fourth of the season and the 48th of his illustrious career. As the game progressed, the momentum only grew. In the third inning, Sam White contributed with a run-scoring groundout, followed by Sauve’s first home run—a two-run blast that soared 441 feet.

The eighth inning witnessed the Mountaineers adding four more runs to their tally. Chase Swain took advantage of a wild pitch to score, while freshman Gavin Kelly showcased his speed by stealing home after hitting a triple. Sauve capped off his stellar day with his second two-run homer of the contest, marking his second career multi-home run game. Kelly further cemented the victory with a two-RBI single in the ninth inning.

A Season to Remember

With this victory, the Mountaineers join an elite group, being one of just seven teams to reach the 30-win mark this season, boasting the second-best winning percentage in the country at .882, just behind Arkansas at .889.

The West Virginia squad is poised for continued success, with their next challenge awaiting them. Mark your calendars as they go head-to-head with Marshall on Tuesday at Jack Cook Field, with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
