Discover the Flavors of Yemen: Marhaba Restaurant Opens in Renton

Seattle food lovers, get ready for an exciting culinary adventure! After years of anticipation, Yemeni cuisine is finally making its flavorful debut in the Seattle area. Tawfik Maudah, a passionate entrepreneur, is set to open Marhaba, which means “welcome” in Arabic, next month. This delightful addition to the culinary scene will take root in a former Pizza Hut on Sunset Boulevard in Renton.

A Growing Demand for Yemeni Cuisine

For years, people have been inquiring, "When are we going to have a Yemeni restaurant here?" Maudah explains that the demand for Yemeni food has been unmet in Western Washington for too long. This vibrant cuisine, cherished in diverse metro areas like Dallas, Chicago, and Detroit, has found its way to the Seattle region — the second Yemeni restaurant to open this year, following the launch of Taste of Yemen in Kent.

“There is a significant community here that has grown up enjoying Yemeni food,” notes Maudah, highlighting the broad appeal of this delightful cuisine. From Ethiopians and Kenyans to Somalis and South Asians, Yemeni dishes resonate with many cultures. With Marhaba, these communities will finally have a home to savor their beloved dishes.

A Menu Bursting with Flavor

Yemeni cuisine is rich with flavors, emphasizing meat prepared in ingenious ways—whether cooked in underground ovens or on hot stones. At Marhaba, diners can look forward to a thoughtfully curated menu featuring:

  • Zurbian (a fragrant biryani dish)
  • Fahsa (a traditional lamb stew)
  • Freshly baked flatbreads

Maudah envisions a menu that caters to all tastes, including breakfast favorites like shakshuka and fouul (bean dishes).

“All the meat will be halal and organic, sourced from a farm in Oregon,” insists Maudah, ensuring guests enjoy quality ingredients while supporting ethical practices.

A Culinary Destination for East Africans and Beyond

Maudah believes that Marhaba will quickly become a hub for East Africans and others craving authentic Yemeni dishes. Many from Bellevue, Kent, and Redmond have expressed a desire for greater representation of their culinary heritage. To further enhance the dining experience, Maudah plans to create a beautiful outdoor garden where patrons can enjoy meals amidst nature, adding a scenic backdrop to their visits.

“It will be a very unique experience," Maudah promises. “People will remember this restaurant for its beautiful garden and inviting flowers.”
