**What Led to the Zelle App Shutdown?**
When Zelle made its debut in 2017, a mere 60 financial institutions in the U.S. were onboard. Fast forward to today, and that number has skyrocketed to over **2,200**. This rapid expansion means that less than **2%** of Zelle transactions are now made through the standalone app. Thus, Zelle has been gradually phasing out this feature since October 2024.
According to a recent press release from Zelle, “**The vast majority of people using Zelle to send money prefer doing so through their financial institution’s mobile app or online banking experience, and we believe this is the best venue for Zelle transactions**.”
In December, Zelle faced scrutiny when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau **sued the company** along with three major banks for allegedly failing to shield consumers from rampant fraud within the peer-to-peer payment network. It’s worth noting that this lawsuit has since been dropped.
