Remembering a Father with Love: A Unique Wedding on Cheltenham Gold Cup Day

Weddings are often reflective of the couples’ personalities, dreams, and cherished memories. For Shell Holden and Ian Menzies, their nuptials held a special significance as they chose to celebrate their love on a date filled with personal memories: March 14, Cheltenham Gold Cup Day. This day not only marked a festive occasion but also served as an homage to Shell’s late father, creating a joyful yet poignant atmosphere.

Honoring a Legacy Through Celebration

Shell’s father, who passed away six years ago, had a profound influence on her love for horse racing. Growing up, the thrill of watching the Gold Cup together became a cherished tradition. Thus, selecting this day for their wedding was a heartwarming way to keep his spirit alive.

“We picked the Gold Cup date to remember him in a really fun way,” Shell shared. “We brought in screens to the restaurant and arranged bets for everyone, creating a collective experience that celebrated both Dad and our love.”

An Intimate Ceremony at Marco Pierre White

The wedding took place at the Marco Pierre White Restaurant in Donnybrook, Dublin, setting the stage for a cozy and intimate gathering. With around 45 guests, including family and close friends, the couple aimed to stay focused on the significance of the day.

“We kept the ceremony small, so that we could fully embrace the moment.”

Shell had an eclectic bridal party, featuring seven bridesmaids (including a “bridesman”), representing different chapters of her life.

A Departure from Tradition

When it came to her wedding attire, Shell broke from convention, choosing a short dress from London designer Nadine Merabi.

“I always wanted something tailored and chic, not the traditional fairytale gown,” she explained.

The venue’s dog-friendly policy allowed their beloved dog, Chip, to join in the festivities, adding a personal touch to the celebration. Chip made a memorable entrance at the end of the ceremony, bringing smiles and warmth to the moment.

A Personal Touch to Every Detail

Walking down the aisle with her brother, Shane, Shell chose an unconventional yet joyous track—“That’s My Love” by The Emotions—setting a celebratory tone for the ceremony. The non-religious service was beautifully orchestrated by Miriam Fitzgerald, a family friend who captured the essence of Shell and Ian’s love story with eloquence and grace.

“We lit remembrance candles for those who couldn’t be there and included a handfasting ceremony with thirteen friends draping colors over us,” Shell noted.

After signing the register, the couple walked out to “Everlasting Love” by Natalie Cole, marking the beginning of their reception.

A Joyful Reception Filled with Music and Dance

As guests arrived for the drinks reception, the sun shone down on the courtyard, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.

“We were blessed with beautiful weather. Everyone enjoyed prosecco and canapés while soaking in the sun,” Shell recalled.

The evening was filled with the soulful sounds of Jess Kav, whose Motown and disco vibes resonated with everyone, reflecting the couple’s shared love for music.

“I grew up listening to legends like the Pointer Sisters and Tina Turner, and now, that music brought our worlds together,” Shell shared.

Although she initially planned not to have a first dance, the rhythm of the evening led her onto the dance floor, creating an impromptu moment that mirrored their joyous spirit.

Cherishing the Moments of Togetherness

Reflecting on the day, Shell reminisced about the connections formed among guests from different aspects of their lives:

“Seeing our cousins and friends bonding was surreal. It was a beautiful tapestry of our journeys intertwined,” she expressed.

Such memories highlight the power of love, not only in uniting two people but also in bridging the gaps between friends and family.
