Lehigh University Softball Faces Tough Defeat Against Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – It was a blustery Tuesday afternoon when the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks faced off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on their home turf. Despite an impressive performance from first-year standout Kelly Fricker, who shined with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, the Mountain Hawks ultimately fell to their Big Ten rivals, suffering a 6-1 defeat.

Game Highlights

From the onset, the weather mirrored the competitive spirit of the game. As the teams took the field at the Rutgers Softball Complex, the first inning presented a solid start for Lehigh, with two hits but no runs on the board. It was LA Matthews of Rutgers who struck first, launching a solo home run that set the tone and sent a ripple of energy through the crowd.

The Mountain Hawks responded quickly, tying the game in the second inning. Senior Lindsey Martin opened the half with a drawn leadoff walk and made her way around the bases, scoring on a fielding error by Matthews at first base. This moment injected renewed life into the Lehigh squad, temporarily leveling the contest at 1-1.

Turning Points

However, it was Baileigh Burtis‘ two-run single in the third inning that shifted the momentum firmly in Rutgers’ favor, breaking the tie. The Knights continued to assert their dominance with additional runs in the fourth—a base hit from Jillian Anderson influenced a critical scoring play—and two more in the sixth, courtesy of Matthews and a bases-loaded walk to Bailey Briggs.

Despite this setback, Fricker’s performance stood out as a bright spot for Lehigh. Securing three of the team’s four hits, she also successfully drew a walk, showcasing her potential for future games. Additionally, senior Julia Mrochko contributed with the only other hit for the Mountain Hawks. Now reflecting on a record of 18-19 for the season, the team’s resilience remains commendable.

Pitching Update

On the mound, junior Chloe Hess started for Lehigh, allowing three runs on five hits over three innings. Senior Maria Urban took over for two innings of relief, yielding just one run on a hit. Sophomore Maddy Clark closed the game, giving up two runs in the final inning, yet the team’s collective effort remained strong throughout the matchup.

Looking Ahead

As the Mountain Hawks regroup, their focus shifts to upcoming Patriot League play. This weekend, they will engage in a thrilling three-game series against Colgate, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and concluding with a single game on Sunday, also at noon.
